The purpose of the Clinical Educator / RN Charge is to assist the Director/ Manager in providing
operational accountability for the nursing unit during assigned shift. Expected to participate in
educational development, as well as assume responsibility for personal growth and skill development.
Responsible for assessing, developing, planning, implementing, and evaluating educational programs
for Critical Care personnel to maintain competency, continuing education, and leadership development.
Education:
ASN required, MSN preferred.
Licensure & Certification:
RN licensure required
BLS required
ACLS and PALS required within 6 months of hire
Basic ECG interpretation required within 6 months of hire
Minimum of 1 year IMCU or Critical Care hospital experience preferred.
General Responsibilities
Assess the patient in a systematic, organized manner
Formulates a nursing plan of care for each patient based on nursing diagnoses/patient problems
derived from patient assessments.
Plan care which include goals and prioritizes nursing approached or measures derived from the
nursing diagnosis
Evaluate with the patient the status of goal achievement as a basis for reassessment, re-ordering
priorities, new goal setting, and revision of the plan of nursing care
Delegates nursing care activities to members of the nursing team based on patient care needs and
competencies of available nursing staff as necessary.
Adapts teaching to the educational level and cognition state of each patient to promote maximum
understanding.
Bases professional actions on clinical judgment. Adapts patient care to individual patient needs
and staff competencies.
Communicates effectively with the Charge Nurse, Manager and Director to ensure that problems or
opportunities to improve unit activities are addressed.
Actively participates in department staff meetings with a focus on providing input to improve the quality
of services.
Collecting and prioritizing data relative to immediate condition and anticipated needs
Assessing a patient’s condition to develop and implement plan of care
Observing and recording patient vital signs
Ensuring that monitors and other types of medical equipment function properly
Administering intravenous fluids and medications
Providing education and support to patients and families.
Assist the Director/Manager in providing operational accountability for the nursing unit during assigned
shift. Help monitor outcomes on the unit by assisting with unit based audits.
Acts as a clinical resource for critical care personnel using current literature and guidelines,
organizational policies and procedures, and regulatory and accreditation standards.
Coordinates, facilitates, and manage change within the Critical Care area.
Provides educational resources for Critical Care personnel using evidence based standards and
professional guidelines.
Assist Critical care personnel in the evaluation of current practice through quality and process
improvement measures.
Manage all aspects of educational projects, employee data and records as required.
Facilitates student learning experiences in the Critical Care setting.
Assists Critical Care personnel in assessing their individual learning needs and styles.
Facilitates and monitors Critical Care personnel compliance with organizational policies and
procedures and regulatory and accreditation standards.
