The Role:

The Manufacturing Project Manager will design manufacturing processes, procedures, and production layouts with respect to the design, build and test of spaceflight hardware. The selected candidate will work directly with technicians to provide leadership on the construction and troubleshooting of cutting edge opto-mechanical assemblies for a variety of customers. 

Essential Functions:

  • Collaborates with the Engineering function on material and processes that will enhance Design for Manufacturability and Test (DFMAT).
  • Develops, implements and studies manufacturing engineering plans and projects related to the fabrication of reflective mirrors, structural assemblies, and mechanisms.
  • Develops manufacturing strategies for specific products and processes.
  • Participates in engineering project teams to coordinate the release of new products.
  • Estimates and tracks manufacturing costs, along with initiating Continuous Improvement activities.
  • Maintains records and reporting systems for coordination of manufacturing operations.
  • Investigates and initiates corrective action of problems and deficiencies to ensure product quality.
  • Provide engineering support for the assembly and integration of a variety of opto-mechanical and electrical assemblies for internal systems and external commercial customers.
  • Propose and lead assembly process improvement projects.
  • Write detailed manufacturing instructions.
  • Interface with and direct technicians and other operations personnel.
  • Interact with hardware designers through specifications of functional requirements for assembly and integration support equipment.
  • Support design engineering, analysis, program management and IPT leads, process development, and proposal activities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team of highly skilled process/metrology engineers and technicians.
  • Proof of strong problem-solving capability, people skills, and the ability to conduct presentations for management, technical experts, and customers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering/technology with a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience.
  • 15 years of experience in a leadership capacity. 
  • 15 years of experience in new product implementation. 

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Active security clearance.
  • Experience in a Development or R&D Manufacturing environment.
  • Lean (Green Belt, Black Belt) certification.
  • CAD training (Solid Works/AutoCAD).
  • Experience in lower volume manufacturing in the mechanical or optical fields.
  • Gage, Dimension and Tolerancing (GD&T) experience.
  • Willingness to be flexible with schedule, including occasional overtime and/or extended shifts.
  • Fluent in Microsoft Office suite, specifically Excel, Word, and PowerPoint (Visio and Project a plus).
  • Knowledge of program and project management techniques and tools.
  • Knowledge of mechanical hardware, structural bonding, contamination control, process layout and procedure writing
  • Familiarity with AS9100/ISO9001 industry standards.
  • Knowledge of fabrication and metrology of reflectors, lenses, composite and specialty metal structures (invar/titanium), opto/mechanical alignment.
