The Role:

The Project Director has responsibility for delivering a large and complex project program to successful completion. This role is responsible for effective project management of all project phases including planning, execution, control and closure, assuring that the investments are able to achieve functional, strategic, and financial goals. The Project Director reports to the Head of the Design and Construction and is part of the D&C Leadership Team. Work is self-directed. 

The responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:

  • Under the direction of the Executive Director in Design and Construction, this role manages the implementation of large and complex design and construction projects throughout all phases of execution.
  • Overall responsibility for the successful realization of major projects and related projects.
  • Member of the respective steering committees.
  • Directly accountable to the governance or steering committees for successful delivery of the projects.
  • Ensuring all project goals while maintaining compliance (Roche directives, local building code requirements, fire protection regulations, procurement guidelines, Technical Standards, Engineering Manual).
  • Makes and is responsible for decisions within the framework of the “Delegation of Authority” or obtains decisions in the respective governance or steering committees by submitting a recommendation and possible alternatives.
  • Manages project requirements in collaboration with respective user representatives; this includes in particular the recording and updating of the user requirements. Define the strategies for planning, procurement, execution, commissioning and the coordination of financial resources.
  • Ensure the application of professional and efficient business processes at all levels within the framework of project management.
  • Responsible for quality, cost and schedule control as well as risk management.
  • Ensure a phase-appropriate structure for the project organization including securing the necessary resources and expertise.
  • Evaluate and select external partners (specialists, planners, consultants, contractors and suppliers) in collaboration with internal partners.
  • Partner and benchmark within global network and externally in support of projects.
  • Ensure that the research and integration of appropriate innovation and sustainability occurs on each project.
  • Proactive and cross-departmental collaboration with all stakeholders such as business functions, corporate groups (Finance, IT, Corporate Relations, Procurement, People and Culture, Legal), Site Services (Real Estate & Workplace Effectiveness, EHS, Site Operations, Security, Workforce Services, Strategic Business Operations), to ensure smooth and goal-oriented project execution.
  • Projects may be in support of business needs (research, labs, manufacturing, and commercial) or campus infrastructure. 
  • All projects are to be executed through established capital delivery processes (i.e., Engineering Manual) and the incumbent ensures that key stakeholders are engaged in defining project requirements and scope, business case justification, and economic evaluations required to secure financial approval.
  • Ensure that projects meet intended functionality while controlling cost.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the organization.
  • Demonstrate professional conduct when communicating with peers, customers and supervisor.
  • Exercise excellent judgment in determining appropriate project communications to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide strong team leadership and champion team collaboration.
  • Influence and negotiate with team and stakeholders to gain alignment amongst conflict without damaging relationships.

Lead Project Execution:

  • The Project Director is expected to lead 1-3 active projects at the same time in an independent manner while proactively escalating issues and gaining support from the steering committee and upper management.
  • The projects overall valuation will be in excess of $1B.
  • The Project Director has primary responsibility for the project from the project initiation stage through project closeout. This includes conducting work safely with minimum business impact.
  • Key tasks include defining the scope and priorities for the project, documenting and vetting the business case, managing internal and external stakeholders, leading the project design and construction, managing and updating the project schedule, managing the project budget, obtaining purchase orders, approving invoices, updating the project Cora Systems database as well as creating formal written monthly reports to the steering committee on each project.
  • The role may require the management of a limited number of direct staff (1-6).
  • Accountable for people development, training and performance management.

Present Projects to Senior Leadership:

  • Demonstrates strong executive presence with excellent communication and listening skills.
  • Responsible to lead the project team to complete the activities defined in each phase of the project, and then present to the governance or steering committee for updates and key decisions.
  • The audience ranges from the Capital Governance Committee (CGC), Steering Committee and senior leadership 

Contribution to Design and Construction Organization:

  • The Project Director is expected to be a leader within the D&C organization to proactively identify process improvements, be a role model, and mentor to less experienced staff members.
  • A fraction of the Project Director’s time will be spent supporting broad D&C and Site Services processes improvement projects and LEAN initiatives, to improve the processes and functioning of the overall team.
  • Positively influence others to achieve results that are in the best interest of the organization.
  • Effectively and constructively, challenge the status quo, within and beyond identifying better ways to accomplish department objectives. 
  •  Act as an advocate for new processes, procedures, technologies and techniques 
  • Pursue professional development and identify annual development goals. 
  • Successful completion of specific site training and continual training compliance. 

Requirements

Education and Expertise:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering (Civil, Structural, Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical), or Construction Management with 15 years successfully managing design and construction projects.
  • Graduate degree, preferably in Architecture, Engineering or Construction Management desirable.
  • Certification in Project Management (i.e. PMI certification) or additional relevant management training desirable.
  • Experience in Facilities Operations, Engineering, and Planning, or related field desirable.
  • Experience delivering large ($150M ) and complex design and construction projects.
  • Lab and research project expertise required.
  • Greenfield project experience required.
  • Special knowledge requirements include successfully executing projects on large and complicated existing campus environments.

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies:

  • Exceptional teamwork and collaboration skills are essential to facilitate the work of cross-functional and interdepartmental teams.
  • Exceptional leadership, interpersonal communications (written/verbal), negotiating skills, conflict resolution, and people management skills.
  • Excellent organization and planning skills.
  • Experience with collaborative project delivery (e.g., IPD, HCPD, other) approaches.
  • Proven expertise in effectively applying, developing, and streamlining, advanced project management tools and methodologies. This includes examples demonstrating reduced complexity and improved efficiency with project management.
  • Understanding of the basic principles of several engineering disciplines.
  • Strong business and technical acumen.
  • General knowledge requirements include good understanding of building codes, company capital finance requirements, basic construction methodology (particularly in architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and control systems), EH&S policies and regulations, and IT systems.
