Head of Software Engineering - Kohler Ventures

Work Mode: Hybrid

Location: Hybrid, 3 days/week onsite at Palo Alto, CA or NYC

We are seeking a Head of Software Engineering who is passionate about designing and building engaging digital consumer mobile and web experiences powered by high-performing, secure, and robust back-end platforms. The ideal candidate will have a successful track record building and scaling software organizations and launching high-quality products on time.

In your role as Head of Software Development at Kohler Ventures you will:

  • Lead the entire software engineering function and team across apps, cloud backend, and firmware.
  • As a core member of the Kohler Ventures Senior Leadership Team, work collaboratively across teams and functions to ensure the success of the organization.
  • Direct the development team (internal employees and external contractors) in the design, development, coding, testing and debugging of software in line with customer and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead Agile software development processes to translate needs from customers into working software.
  • Ensure software architecture is secure, scalable, robust, and highly functional, and integrates deeply with hardware and firmware.
  • Obtain the necessary regulatory certifications and audits.
  • Make and implement platform decisions, and discover and implement new technologies that yield competitive advantage.
  • Set and deliver success metrics for the software team including velocity/delivery, code quality, and operational effectiveness.
  • Own software quality assurance and testing, including automated functional and scalability testing.
  • Ensure an appropriate continuous integration and delivery pipeline is in place for multiple teams, and set the standards for monitoring operational effectiveness including uptime, error rates, and root cause analysis, and change management.
  • Recruit, excite, and develop top tier software engineering talent as part of the organization growth plan.

Skills/Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or related field (Masters preferred) from a leading university.
  • 8 years of experience in a leadership role in a rapidly growing organization (startup or new business unit) with demonstrated entrepreneurial tenacity and global team leadership.
  • Significant experience in the following:
    • Designing and building software mobile apps and backend cloud platforms, preferably in a regulated environment.Experience in operating systems and firmware a big plus.
    • Standing up agile software development environments, and putting in place leading practices, protocols, teams, and organizational structures.
    • Building data solutions leveraging ML/AI to create competitive advantage for organizations.
    • Collaborating with hardware, design, and data teams.
    • Optimizing financial spend with the ability to identify, execute and track efficiencies across the software development function.
  • Experience in consumer electronics, connected or smart home devices experience preferred.
  • 5 years of lifecycle product development experience, from concept through production and support, preferably at a fast-growing consumer IoT organization.
  • 5 years of iOS, Android, native and hybrid mobile application architecture experience.
  • 5 years of back-end platform architecture experience.
  • Experience implementing testing frameworks, documentation, deployment pipelines for back-end and front.
  • Experience working with cloud services platforms such as AWS, and relational/non-relational databases.
  • Results oriented with strong problem-solving and execution skills.
  • Excellent communication and people management skills.
  • Travel approximately 30-40%, both domestic and international.

We will consider applicants requiring sponsorship for this opportunity.

The approved base salary range for this position is $171,800-$220,900. The actual base salary offered to a candidate may be higher than the approved range. This will vary depending on a variety of factors including the candidate’s experience, their education, and the work location. This position is eligible for a 30% Area Salary Differential (cost of living adjustment) for San Francisco Bay area. The approved base salary range including ASD for this position is $223,340-$287,170. In addition, this position is eligible for a performance bonus and a special project incentive. Available benefits include medical, dental, vision and 401k.
