Job Description

Job Title: Employment Specialist

Summary: An employee in this classification is under the direct supervision of the Program Manager/Unit Director. The Employment Specialist is responsible for assisting job-seeking youth and adults with career development activities designed to link them with employment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs an in-depth assessment including social history, current legal and financial status, employability, physical/mental health, and eligibility for benefit programs and local social services.

  • Assists clients with preparing service plans geared toward employment and self-sufficiency.
  • Implements individual and group programs in a variety of areas such as job readiness, resume writing, interviewing and online applications.
  • Identifies employment opportunities with area employers as well as engaging them in job development activities.
  • Partners with the American Job Center and the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act to establish paid work experiences and on-the-job training opportunities. Provide clients that obtain employment with supportive services such as transportation, work clothing, necessary tools, and safety equipment to enable a successful transition into the workplace.
  • Develops and facilitates job clubs to promote the exchange of job leads, reinforce employability skills and provide support to one another.
  • Assists with the development and organization of virtual and in person job fairs.
  • Establishes additional ride share agreements with employers whose job sites do not have access to public transportation.
  • Refers clients to adult education, short-term training, pre-apprenticeship and registered apprenticeship programs as needed to achieve the objectives of the client service plan.
  • Maintains up to date client files insuring that a historical account of the activities conducted with each client is properly made and that all services provided and significant events or benchmarks related to the client are appropriately documented.
  • Reports in writing and orally on services provided and observations about client status changes.
  • Prepares other reports as required.
  • Uses a computer to maintain records, make reports, and compile data.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Ability to work in a caring, effective way with at-risk clients.
  • Knowledge of basic counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of community social services.
  • Computer literate with ability to use common word processing software.
  • Knowledge of virtual platforms such as Zoom and Go To Meeting.
  • Ability to use the computer to access data bases and record activities
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to obtain facts by personal contact, observation, and the examination of records.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations.
  • Ability to produce accurate reports and correspondence.

Education and Experience: Qualifications include college degree in related field and related experience or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. Prefer 1-3 years related experience in social services. Computer literate. Must have good driving record, and safe driving habits. Requires valid Tennessee Driver’s license, auto insurance and reliable automobile for daily use (mileage reimbursed). Must be willing to work a flexible schedule as necessary.

Salary: Skill Level 7
