Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assess patients with difficult access or need for long term intra-venous (IV) therapy for appropriate vascular access device
Works with staff nurses, physicians, case managers and other team members to ensure early assessment for Vascular Access Devices (VAD) selection and implementation
Participates in education with Vascular Access education with patient, family members and staff
Reviews physicians order
Obtains informed consent
Reviews medical records for any contraindications of peripheral vascular access
Determines the best vascular access device for the patient base on medications, current access status, diagnoses, length of IV therapy and etc.
Places Vascular Access Device, (PICC, Midline, Peripheral) or recommends alternate means of access.
Reports directly to patient’s primary nurse and charge nurse or physician, if necessary.
Maintains a working knowledge of infection prevention practices for device insertions.
Troubleshoots difficult complications for vascular access devices and/or assists staff in troubleshooting.
De-clot vascular access devices or assists staff as a resource.
Documents completely and accurately in the patient’s permanent medical record or CDS.
Proper charge capture of vascular access devices and assisting in maintaining appropriate inventory
Seeks assistance from fellow Vascular Access Team member as well as Radiologist when necessary.
Knowledge in quality initiatives relating to Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infections (CLABSI)
Review and assist with process improvement as applicable within the Vascular Access Team
Participates in call rotation with fellow Vascular Access Team members
Requirements Include
Job Qualification:
Valid Ohio Board of Nursing RN license
Ability to interpret ECG (electrocardiogram) readings
Competency in the placement of Vascular Access Devices; such as Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICC), Midlines, Ultrasound Guided Peripheral Intravenous insertions (USGPI)
Follows the Ohio Board of Nursing Interpretive Guidelines for Utilization of the Sapien TCS or other comparable device to confirm PICC tip placement.
High level Skills in critical thinking and assessment related to vascular access device selection
High level clinical communication skills with physicians and other clinical staff
Ability to maintain and improve knowledge level related to vascular access with seminars, magazines and books
