GENERAL SUMMARY
The Fuel Manager is responsible for procuring biomass for the plant ensuring a reliable and steady fuel supply. Fuel procurement is a critical function that contributes to the overall success of plant operations.
PRIMARY DUTIES
The job duties listed are typical examples of the work performed by the Fuel Manager. Not all duties assigned to this position are included. The Fuel Manager may be asked to perform other duties and requirements may vary.
- Manage and administer all fuel contracts for the plant
- Evaluate and purchase the desired quantity of biomass fuel for the plant
- Develop and qualify fuel supplies for the plant using existing and new supply opportunities
- Gather market intelligence related to new supply, existing supply and stay abreast of new developments in the wood basin
- Optimize spot fuel purchases and contractual commitments to meet plant budget
- Negotiate and write both short term and long-term fuel supply agreements consistent with company guidelines
- Manage fuel surveys and inventory calculation and reporting on monthly and annual basis.
- Manage biomass fuel supplier relations by influencing and educating suppliers in regard to quality resulting in best cost and quality combination of fuel that meets and exceeds regulations
- Maintain communication with plant management to ensure that fuel inventories are meeting operations needs and demands
- Partner with plant management to ensure that procured fuel material is compatible with plant operating and regulatory requirements
- Track and monitor fuel costs
- Review and approve invoices for fuel purchases
- Develop and present quarterly and annual fuel reports, including forecasting a fuel procurement budget
- Create reports documenting plant fuel diversion and emissions offset requirements
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY
This is an individual contributor role. The Fuel Manager position does not manage staff.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The Fuel Manager reports to the Plant Manager and may also take direction from other members of the plant management team.
Requirements
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Education in Forest Management, Natural Resources Management or other related fields.
- Prior procurement experience preferred.
- Experience in wood fuel or biomass, fiber, timber procurement in the paper, lumber or biomass industry is preferred
- Proficient in Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word and Excel
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and autonomously with minimal supervision
- Must have a valid, unrestricted driver’s license
