Kleinschmidt Group is Hiring a Dam Safety Engineering Section Manager Near Redmond, WA

Kleinschmidt has a full-time opening for a Dam Safety Engineering Section Manager to lead the dam safety design for hydroelectric, fisheries, and water resources projects, as well as lead a section of dam safety engineering staff. Preferred locations for the individual to be based out of include our office locations in Pittsfield and Falmouth, ME, Portland, OR, Redmond, WA, Madison, WI and Lexington, SC. All other Kleinschmidt office locations will also be considered. Our flexibility and core value of relationships allows us to offer employees the opportunity to work in an office, or remotely, based on their personal needs.

Salary: $120,000-$160,000/year (based on experience)

Who You Are

A licensed Professional Engineer with a bachelor's degree and a minimum of 10 years' experience in dam safety engineering and a focus in structural, geotechnical, or hydrologic and hydraulics engineering. Experience with federal and state regulation of hydroelectric and non-hydroelectric projects is required. Possess excellent problem-solving skills and capable of working collaboratively with clients and team members in a dynamic, multidisciplinary consulting firm.

Skilled Independent Consultant: Approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to conduct Part 12 Dam Safety Inspections or the ability to receive this designation within two years.

Relationship-focused: Ability to foster a collaborative environment and builds trust and respect amongst peers/section/clients.

Leadership: A technical leader who can lead technical staff in project teams and lead section staff in terms of development, skill set capabilities, capacity, and utilization. Demonstrates good communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.

Team Player: Ability to work closely with direct reports, other Section Managers, Discipline Leaders, Technical Advisors and Project Managers on labor resources, company technical abilities, project pursuits, and project delivery.

Additional Requirements

  • Must possess permanent authorization to work in the United States and able to acquire authorization to work in Canada.
  • Must be willing to travel and possess a valid driver's license.

About the Position

Technical Leadership

  • This position is in the dam safety engineering discipline and involves dealing with unique dam safety and compliance issues at existing hydroelectric and non-hydroelectric projects as well as new projects.
  • Travel for inspection, assessment, and analysis of a variety of types of water-retaining structures. Typical travel expected 10-20% of time.
  • Experience participating in and/or facilitating screening level/semi-quantitative risk assessments is a plus.
  • The position includes the management of multi-discipline projects of varying sizes and complexities.
  • Working directly with clients and contractors in the field during the planning and construction of projects.
  • Mentorship of junior engineering staff.
  • Works to meet or exceed personal utilization target on a quarterly basis.

Section Management

  • Meet or exceed Section dollar utilization on a quarterly basis.
  • Communicate corporate news and policies; reinforce them routinely to ensure acknowledgement and incorporations into daily duties.
  • Provide analysis and recommendations for actions on labor resources for the Section to the Technical Director on a bi-weekly basis.
  • Ensure company processes and practices are adhered to by staff (e.g., safety, timekeeping, cybersecurity).
  • Collaborate with Section Managers, Discipline Leaders, Technical Advisors, Regional Vice Presidents, Principals and Project Managers on staffing based on company technical abilities, project pursuits, and project delivery.
  • Meet with direct reports on a regular basis (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly pending staff experience and need) to assist with workload management, review utilization metrics, provide coaching, and discuss pertinent questions or topics at hand.
  • Evaluate direct reports on an annual basis based on feedback received and experience and meet with direct reports to discuss their advancement and performance. As needed, develops Corrective Action Plans for in need of performance improvement.
  • Host weekly or bi-weekly section meetings to plan upcoming workloads, ensure team development, and communicate corporate news and policies as pertinent.
  • Administers performance bonus program and salary adjustments.
  • Coordinate with Discipline Leaders and Section staff on actively engaging and guiding Development Plans and perform quarterly check and adjusts with technical staff.
  • Administer Section Technical Development Budget.
  • Meet with direct reports on a quarterly basis to review development plan progress and metrics dashboard updates in quarterly check and adjusts.
  • Work with PMs and Discipline Leaders, and other Section Managers on use of personnel in the execution of projects.
  • Foster a collaborative environment that rewards a growth mindset (personal, professional) and builds trust and respect amongst peers.
