Position Purpose

Key Responsibilities 

The Oncology Nurse oversees and delivers the care of the patient with hematologic/oncologic diagnoses within the statues of the Arizona State Nurse Practice Act. Works with and follows the clinical direction of the Medical Oncologist/Hematologist to provide cancer treatment care.

 Qualifications 

Education: Associate Degree in Nursing or graduate of a Nursing Diploma program

Certification:

· Chemotherapy certification

· Current BLS certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross

Licensure:

· Current and valid Arizona RN License or compact license

Continuing Education:

Must complete 12 hours of cancer-related continuing education every calendar year or maintain a current oncology nursing certification including but not limited to:

  1. Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner (AOCNP)
  2. Advanced Oncology Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist (AOCNS)
  3. Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse (AOCN)
  4. Blood & Marrow Transplant Certified Nurse (BMTCN)
  5. Certified Breast Care Nurse (CBCN)

6. Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN)

Preferences 

Experience:

· Two or more years as an Oncology RN

· Clinical Trials Research Coordinator Training

Certification:

· Oncology Certified RN

· Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) certification

Licensure: N/A

Preferred Responsibilities

Administrative:

· Collaborates and works closely with key personnel to ensure coordination of services, patient centered care, timely processing of clinical information and billing. Provides input and standards in formulating patient care policy and procedures at the cancer center.

· Attends meetings as required; performs other job-related duties as assigned by the administrative director.

· Helps develop team cohesiveness and aligns individual efforts with the group. Maintains a positive, helpful attitude when working with individuals within and outside of the work unit.

· Adjusts to change in a positive and supportive manner.

· Maintains effective communication within the units.

· Provides leadership and developmental opportunities.

· Exhibits an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of team members and recognizes individuals for their contributions. Collaborating with other team members and providing constructive feedback. Accepts feedback and applies it to improvement of individual performance.

· Assist the administrative director in optimally managing expenses.

· Assure all revenue producing opportunities are appropriately recognized with the assistance of the appropriate support departments.

· Assure that appropriate financial and statistical data is available for the Director.

· Initiate and facilitate analysis to assure minimum delays in the flow of patients, materials and information, remaining cognizant of the effects of work unit activities on the integrated practice.

· Encourage and facilitate continuous improvement work groups. Maintain a basic skill level in continuous improvement theory and methodology.

· Assure that a mechanism is in place for effective training and instruction of new physician and KHI staff to the systems with which they will interact.

· Maintain basic awareness of the information systems utilized by the work unit.

· Assist work unit in development of new and expanded programs.

· Demonstrates processes in developing good judgments and sound decisions. Provides consistent and open encouragement to trying new and creative approaches.

· Promotes an environment that is open and collaborative while keeping the team focused on a common goal. Serves as a role model to foster and build trust. Provides an environment for easy access to express ideas and concerns. Demonstrates and expects open communication. Demonstrates available presence.

· Cancer Center goal for patient satisfaction has been met, 75th percentile is the goal, and 90th percentile is the stretch goal.

· Exhibits a commitment to operational management and completing tasks through personal initiative, persistence, and stamina.

· Completes assignments on time, contributing extra effort needed when circumstances hinder progress.

Clinical:

· Responsible for maintaining clinical trials program at the cancer center as required by the State of Arizona and practice parameters specified in ACOS/ACR/ASTRO accreditation for medical and radiation oncology departments.

· Ensures all departmental policies are met

· Demonstrates submission of accurate billing/treatment information and documentation to ensure compliance with related billing charges as related to clinical trials.

· Respond promptly to all patient complaints.

· Maintain an understanding of the basic and clinical research efforts of the department.

· Work closely with the medical director in the administration of extramurally funded programs.

· Adheres to patient confidentiality, understands the necessity for maintaining confidentiality for all sensitive oral, paper-based and electronic information and restricts the flow of such information to those who have a legitimate “need to know”

· Demonstrates patient and customer focus by treating patients and others we serve as a top priority and by meeting or exceeding their expectations.

· Contributes ideas/suggestions and participates in activities for improving processes and services to our patients and customers.

· Participates in evaluating and monitoring feedback from patients and customers for improving the unit’s efficiency.

Education:

· Responsible for continuing education requirement to maintain certification

· Responsible for continuing education to ensure adherence to latest clinical standards as dictated by ACOS/ACR/ASTRO practice parameters.

· Attends and participates in classes, seminars, workshops and other continuing education as appropriate to maintain and enhance professional knowledge and/or job skills.

· If applicable, maintains competence in the provision of care and services to patients of the various ages and abilities served.

· Freely shares knowledge and information to assist in educating and training of KHI staff and physicians.

· Ability to walk and stand between 8 to 12 hours

· Must be able to assist with the movement of an adult patient weighing up to 300 pounds

· Ability to lift equipment, climb, bend and stoop, and push/pull wheelchairs

· Able to handle multiple priorities simultaneously

· Demonstrates good oral and written communication skills

· Able to manage technical business equipment i.e. phone, fax, computer etc.
