Summary
- JOB SUMMARYThe Educator-RN is responsible for providing competent nursing care for patient education related to Bariatric Surgery. The Educator-RN collaborates with nurses, physicians, dietitians, and other members of the health care team in providing education to patients pursuing bariatric surgery.
- DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Functions within the multifaceted education instructional team. Provides a collaborative approach to prepare patients for bariatric surgery. Consults with bariatric surgeons and other health care personnel to determine patient’s educational needs.
- Interviews patients to obtain medical health history and assess learning needs. Provides patients and their families as appropriate specialized pre and post-operative teaching geared toward the education at the level of the patient/family /significant other to optimize patient outcomes.
- Appropriate documentation and follow-up are completed in a timely manner.
- Actively participates in the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Committee
- Responsible for ensuring that patients have completed all the necessary preoperative requirements as set forth by the Bariatric Surgery Program prior to having weight loss surgery.
- Assist with and/or supervise tracking of clinical requirements needed to support submission of insurance approval for preauthorization for metabolic and bariatric surgery.
- Meets requirements for mandatory in-services and programs for safety, emergency and competency.
- Supports the development of staff through mentoring, preceptorship and collegiality.
- EDUCATION/LICENSE/ CERTIFICATIONS/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Maintains active RN license in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and any other states as applicable.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) AHA
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
- Obtains and maintains active certification as a Certified Bariatric Nurse (CBN)
Minimum requirement:Preferred qualifications: - WORKING ENVIRONMENT
- This position is in a clinic/office setting
- Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.
- Frequentlyexposed toblood and/or body fluids andinfection.
- Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
- Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation.
- Frequent stress associated with deadlines, change, and regulatory changes.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
- PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Frequently required to maintain in a stationary position (standing or sitting) while preparing education or presenting to a group/individual.
- Frequently required to walk and move about throughout the department and Medical Center.
- Frequently required to operate a computer and other equipment.
- Frequently required to use fine motor skills to handle and operate instruments/devices
- Occasionally required to position self in order to meet patient needs.
- Constantly required to lift and/or move items up to 10 pounds.
- Frequently required to lift and/or move items up to 25 pounds.
- Occasionally required to lift and/or move items up to 100 pounds.
- Constantly required to communicate with team members or patients requiring talking and hearing
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
