Description

Job Summary:

The Motor Equipment Metal Mechanic/Worker is a Certified Paint and Body Technician that performs body repair and painting to a variety of light duty vehicles in the shop, utilizing departmental equipment as authorized and available to accomplish the work. Individuals assigned to this classification will operate under the general direction of our Shop Lead and in accordance with established procedures and methods.

Primary Duties:

  • Performs work assignments on all types of equipment in a timely and efficient manner with a high level of quality
  • Lift parts and equipment components that weigh a maximum of 70 pounds
  • Write accurate and legible Service Reports, read and comprehend blueprints, technical data and service manuals
  • Review damage reports prepare cost estimates and order parts
  • Perform routine metal repairs to vehicle bodies and main frames, inspect and repair body damage, including hammer out or patch dents, dimples and other minor body damage
  • Realign frames and chassis to repair structural damage using hydraulic jack and pulling devise, fit, attach and weld replacement parts into place
  • Remove damaged fenders, panels, and grills, using wrenches and cutting torch
  • Grind, sand, buff and prime refurbished and repaired surfaces, apply new finish to restored body parts
  • Removes upholstery, accessories, electrical and hydraulic window, seat-operating equipment, and trim to gain access to vehicle body and fender
  • Install, repair and weatherproof widows and windshields
  • Aim headlights, aligns wheels
  • Project a positive company image with fellow employees, customers, and management; comply with company dress code
  • Keep work area clean and orderly; follow all work safety rules and procedures
  • Comply with all Contamination Control procedures
  • Ensure accuracy of work orders by charging parts and labor to proper work order segments while using the computer
  • Own and maintain sufficient hand tools to perform the job
  • Keep up to date with developments in tooling, technologies and systems
  • Required to work overtime when needed
  • Accumulate contaminated dirt and filters in drums. Complete stock transfer and transport full drums by forklift to Hazardous Waste Storage area
  • Work with hazardous waste and receive Hazardous Waste Training every year

Qualifications


Education, Experience, Skills:

  • High school education or G.E.D equivalent
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Must be able to communicate clearly (oral and written) in the English language
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite
  • Knowledge of acceptable practices including occupational safety and health regulations
  • Knowledgeable and competent to operate hand tools and power tools
  • Certification of Paint
  • Ability to complete body repairs, prime and paint vehicles to high level of quality
  • Ability to complete windshield repair, replacement and sealing to a high level of quality
  • Alaska Hazardous Paint Handler’s License
  • Must be able to work independently
  • Good documentation and organization skills

Preferred

  • Two (2) Years Previous experience in the field
  • Have their own tools
  • Manufacturer accredited training certificates ASE Certified and/or EVT certified.

Essential functions will require maintaining physical condition necessary for bending, stooping, sitting, walking or standing for prolonged periods of time. Working requirements are a combination of vehicle maintenance shop activities which require lifting, handling or moving up to 50 lbs. and team lifting 50 lbs. or more; Proper wearing of Personal Protective Equipment and hearing protection are required.

Work Environment

Work Environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be borne by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Job is performed in primarily active maintenance shop settings at the USCG Base Kodiak, in office settings as well as in the various shops, commercial buildings, rooms and potential confined spaces in all type of inclement weather conditions. Walking and climbing will be required at work sites. The work environment involves risks or discomforts that require specific safety precautions and specific vehicle and maintenance shop environments.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Additional Qualifying Factors

  • As a condition of employment, may be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening, as well as have acceptable reference and background check results to obtain access to military base.
  • Must be able to drive a company vehicle and be insured
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance necessary
  • Must comply with all company policies
