Summary

The Health Sciences Division has a unique opportunity for a qualified Overdose Training and Community Events Specialist (Education Specialist) to work with group of experts who have access to funds and resources that can further efforts to strengthen and broaden the reach of overdose prevention strategies.
The Overdose Training and Community Events Specialist works directly with the Training Manager for the Overdose Prevention and Response Team. This position is responsible for advancing education efforts aimed at individuals, communities, stakeholders, and organizations regarding overdose recognition and response. Trainings focuses on administering naloxone appropriately, safely, and efficiently, and makes sure it's available. This position will collaborate with various overdose prevention program managers on projects that include first responders, housing providers, and harm reduction supplies. This role assists in the development and delivery of training on overdose prevention and response best practices.

The Health Sciences Division provides robust assessment and evaluation work and population health strategies to influence public health with a focus on community conditions through data, evidence, and emerging best practices in partnership with the community. The Overdose Prevention and Response program is responsible for reducing overdose deaths and improving the health of people who use drugs in King County.

Temporary opportunity. Term-Limited Temporary positions are "at-will" positions but are eligible for benefits. T his TLT is currently anticipated to last 18 months. However, funding sources for this work remain uncertain and dependent upon decisions actively being made at both the federal and local levels. As a result, the end date of this position may be adjusted based on those decisions. The County and the Department continue to work to secure long term funding sources.

This vacancy can also be filled as a Special Duty opportunity. For Special Duty Assignment interest, you must be a Career Service, Career Service Exempt or other regular (non-temporary) employee in King County who has completed their initial County probation. You must have supervisor approval prior to taking a Special Duty Assignment.

Work Schedule The typical work schedule is Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm and may include some evenings and weekends depending on community needs. This is a full-time, 1.0 FTE, 40 hours per week position and is FLSA Non-Exempt (eligible for overtime)

Work Location The position is hybrid telecommute and requires frequent on site/in office with a minimum of 2 on site day a week required in order to prepare trainings, manage equipment and supplies, and attending trainings/events in communities across all areas of King County. This position is based out of the Chinook Building, located at 401 5th Ave, Seattle, WA, 98104.

Some of the work associated with this position will be performed through teleworking, and will report to office location and to meetings as needed. Travel to other work locations may be necessary. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.

Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. To support employees during this time King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support working remotely. The individual selected for this opportunity will be joining an innovative and progressive team.
Job Duties

The Overdose Training Specialist report to and coordinates with the Overdose Training Manager to:
  • Deliver overdose prevention, anti-stigma, and best practice trainings for diverse audiences including healthcare professionals, first responders, community organizations, housing providers, and the general public.
  • Conduct evidence-based training sessions and workshops on overdose prevention and response, utilizing current research and best practices.
  • Assist in coordinating with healthcare providers, first responders, and community organizations to assess training needs and devise customized training plans.
  • Continual tracking of trainings delivered, feedback surveys, and other metrics
  • Actively support (research, assist, coordinate) Overdose Prevention Program projects including security officer training, Fire/EMS leave behind naloxone, and housing resident/peer led support initiatives.
  • Lead or co-lead, participate and engage in community events and outreach endeavors to heighten awareness about overdose prevention initiatives.
  • Provide limited technical assistance and support to community-based organizations and healthcare providers as assigned
  • Manage and maintain training supplies and equipment
  • Contribute to training and community event debriefs
  • Coordinate and collaborate with harm reduction supply training manager as needed
  • Help assess needs; gather and assemble data, implement and evaluate education/organizational programs; may assist in program and curriculum development.
  • Assist in maintain and updating library of training and reference materials.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Experience defined below may have been gained through paid or unpaid activities. We value lived and work experience:
  • Option 1: Associate's degree or higher, AND 1 year work experience in a training or education related role AND 1 year of experience in a public health, harm reduction, or social service setting. OR
  • Option 2: At least two years of health, social service or related experience working directly with individuals who use drugs in a harm reduction, outreach, or clinical setting. OR
  • Option 3:relevant lived experience that can be used to successfully perform the duties of this position
  • American Heart Association certified in basic life support (BLS/CPR-AED)
  • Demonstrated current knowledge of harm reduction principles, opioid and stimulant overdose response; street life; slang vocabularies; drug use practices; local drug treatment and recovery programs; health care and service providers across mental health substance use homeless and housing services, mutual aid landscapes in King County
  • Demonstrated proficiency/ Advanced user with Microsoft Office applications (Power Point, Outlook, Word and Excel)
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License and the ability to drive a county vehicle to locations in and outside King County. The selected will travel between community locations and the Chinook Building in Downtown Seattle, transporting equipment and supplies necessary for community trainings.

  • Demonstrated communication skills with the ability to communicate complex information in a culturally appropriate, consistently respectful, and non-judgmental manner to a wide variety of audiences including people who may be drug impaired, mentally ill and/or emotionally labile.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of staff and constituencies in a diverse community
  • Demonstrated skill in delivering sensitive health information to variable audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly and effectively communicate orally and in writing with supervisor, co-workers, service providers, and the general public.
