WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Kids in the Game Our team serves 800 children ages 4-13 from diverse schools and neighborhoods as part of our year-round after school programs. We offer programming for schools looking to incorporate creative play and engaging sports and fitness classes into the traditional after school time frame. We’re looking for a part time Behavioral Intervention Specialist who possesses the empathy, flexibility, and compassion to provide social-emotional and behavioral support for the students at our programs. The ideal candidate has an understanding of diverse youth development programs (after school programs, summer camps, sports teams), prior experience providing behavioral / mental health services in an educational or recreation-based setting, and a passion for our mission and values.

The Behavioral Intervention Specialist provides on-site behavioral support and conflict resolution strategies for our after-school teams. The Intervention Specialist will offer daily support to after school sites located in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx through a combination of site visits and student observations, 1-on-1 sessions with after school staff and students, as well as ongoing communication via calls, emails, and internal messages. They must have a strong background in youth development, social work, and counseling.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

During daily after school visits, the Behavioral Intervention Specialist will be devoted to providing individual and group-based support to address behavioral issues, help students build coping strategies, and understand their developmental needs. You will work alongside the Site Coordinators and Program Management team to help them identify the appropriate ways to address behavioral or mental health concerns that may arise among their students.

You should have advanced knowledge of positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS), effective communication, and conflict resolution. You will be tasked to provide services to assist in growing students socially, emotionally and intellectually. You will be observing and interacting with students throughout the week during after school hours to make sure their needs are being met and they feel comfortable challenging themselves. We are looking for someone who can think outside the box, helping to create strategies and new ideas to make sure our after school teams are equipped for the school year to help grow and support children’s behavioral and developmental needs.

  • Provide scenario-based training to teams to strengthen staff knowledge of positive behavior interventions & supports, mental health practices, and stress management strategies

  • Design and implement behavior support tools for students; model and share with after school teams

  • Provide support to Site Coordinators by answering their questions or concerns regarding childrens’ behavioral needs or incidents

  • Provide on-site direct support for behavioral issues, including 1:1 student meetings and group observations

  • Work on an individual basis as needed to reinforce appropriate choices regarding student behavior, and create behavioral plans

  • Assist Site Coordinators in preparing parent communications and leading meetings regarding their students behavioral / social emotional needs

  • Be a key resource for leadership teams in problem solving student issues and parental concerns

  • Maintain/file all documentation and incident reports regarding behavioral concerns and plans for students

Schedule & Travel Expectations:

  • This is a part-time school year position from January to June 2024 that requires in-person work and the ability to use public transportation to travel between Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx.

  • Weekly schedule:

    • Must be available 3 to 5 days per week; 2:30 - 6:00 pm (Mon - Fri)

    • You’ll create a weekly schedule of schools to visit in collaboration with the Program Management team

    • You’ll spend 80-90% of the week conducting observations at after school sites and providing on-site support.

Compensation:

  • Hourly Rate:

    • $24 to $30 per hour based on experience and educational status

Our ideal candidate would meet some or all of the following qualifications:

  • Must have completed a physical exam and TB test within one year of the camp dates, pass NYS and national background checks, and be CPR, First Aid, and AED certified

  • Currently pursuing or have recently completed a Master’s in Social Work, Counseling, or Clinical Psychology

  • Possess 2 years of experience working in a behavioral/intervention specialist setting with children and adults

  • Be able to establish and maintain strong working relationships with fellow employees, participants, parents, and caregivers

  • Communicate in a timely and professional fashion with parents, caregivers, kids and staff across organization-wide communication channels (Slack, Email, Text, Google Calendar, etc.) and be able to interpret and understand both written and oral instructions
