Description

Kern Steel Fabrication has provided quality steel construction products for over 50 years. We're looking for an experienced engineer to join our dynamic, fast-paced team and lead one of our top divisions catering to a unique industry - Aerospace.

This position is located in Bakersfield, CA.

The Director of Engineered Products will be responsible for the Engineered Products Division. The division consists of engineers reporting directly, and shop personnel reporting indirectly to the Director. The division provides customers with design, engineering, and development of human access platforms for various aircraft. Aligns the division with the company's business goals and maintains a focus on innovation and customer satisfaction. This position requires thorough, professional communication and coordination with internal team members and external customers.

Essential Functions:

  • Oversees and manages key projects, processes and personnel required for the division.
  • Oversees end-to-end product development process for custom aircraft maintenance stands, from concept to production. Ensures products meet and exceed industry standards, safety requirements, and customer expectations.
  • Develops and executes comprehensive product strategy aligning with business goals; maintains a focus on innovation and customer satisfaction.
  • Leads, mentors, and collaborates with a cross-functional team of engineers, designers, product managers, and manufacturing professionals. Fosters a culture of innovation and excellence.
  • Identifies emerging trends, customer needs, and competitive landscapes to shape product development strategies. Assists in the development of division and corporate goals.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures for product development, from design through a delivered product.
  • Selects correct design concepts and fundamental technology used for new products or existing product improvement.
  • Reviews and analyzes proposals submitted; submits feasible proposals to CEO / President for consideration and budget allocation.
  • Recommends and manages division budget. Optimizes resource allocation for maximum impact, including but limited to staffing, technology, facility and equipment requirements.
  • Provides status updates for CEO / President of each project on a regular basis.
  • Works with the Manufacturing and Quality Manager to monitor quality and process improvements and new product development.
  • Maintains adherence to company policies, quality/safety/environmental standards as outlined in roles and responsibilities of ISO 9001:2015 and AISC / AWS Standards.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

Knowledge of:

  • Technical proficiency in foundational mechanical engineering principles including structural mechanics and materials science.
  • Ability to manage projects and people to achieve company goals. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strategic perspective; ability to direct and guide the division toward long-term objectives.
  • Demonstrate professionalism while interacting with high-profile clients.
  • Understanding of fabrication and machining techniques.
  • Proficient in engineering solutions such as AutoCAD or Solidworks, and in project management software. Knowledge of construction accounting systems a plus.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 5-10 years’ experience in engineering project management or engineering management.
  • Experience with a fast-paced, results-driven environment.
  • Understanding of manufacturing or fabrication operations; structural steel experience a plus.
