TITLE: Peer Tutor/Mentor

PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB:
Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families; high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree; and low-income, firstgeneration military veterans who are preparing to enter postsecondary education. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
* Serve as liaison between staff and participants
* Monitor academic progress, attendance, and participation of upward bound students during the 6-week summer program
* Participate in program activities with upward bound students
* Conduct individual and group instruction meetings
* Participate in training sessions
* Assist in chaperoning cultural, educational, and recreational trips
* Make referrals to UB Program Coordinator or Director in cases requiring additional attention
* Other duties as assigned by the instructor and other UB staff
OTHER DUTIES: Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* Kentucky State University Sophomore status (or above)
* Minimum 2.8 GPA (overall) 3.0 GPA in the subject being tutored: college-level math, English, Spanish, and science courses
* Excellent communication skills are required
* Familiarity and interest in economically and educationally disadvantaged youth
* Preference will be given to individuals who have succeeded in overcoming the disadvantages of circumstances like those of the population of the target areas.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
* Moderate amount of walking required
* Office environment
* Travel required during field trips
