Kentucky Humane Society is Hiring an Animal Care Supervisor Near Louisville, KY

Summary of Purpose: Oversees and provides daily care, cleanliness, comfort, and enrichment to KHS animals at Main Campus, ensuring excellent animal care while promoting a strong, positive team environment.

Duties (Essential Functions):

  • Responsible for daily cleaning and sanitation of assigned animal and common areas with emphasis on disease control protocols; provide spot cleaning of animal areas throughout work schedule
  • Provide all animals with appropriate housing, food, water, bedding, toys and other mental stimulation and daily enrichment, social interaction with humans and, where appropriate, members of own species
  • Directly supervise the Animal Care and Enrichment Specialist (ACES) staff and volunteers providing consistent and fair leadership, communication, and motivation to all team members
  • Daily oversight of shelter cleaning and sanitation ensuring Animal Care, Cleaning, and Feeding SOPs/guidelines are being followed and implemented effectively
  • Implement training plans for new employees that is consistent and thorough with regular follow up so that staff is educated and familiar with policies and procedures
  • Assist Senior Shelter Operations Manager with interviewing, hiring, training, reviewing, terminating, and disciplinary measures
  • Participate in developing and implementing SOP guidelines for best shelter practices
  • Oversee efforts to ensure all pets are provided their 5 freedoms
  • Responsible for opening and closing procedures and ensuring staff are following procedures. Receive and respond to alarm calls as needed
  • Monitor supplies and assist with ordering, ensuring adequate stock while maintaining an organized supply area
  • Ensure a safe working environment; following all safety guidelines
  • Communicate with the Senior Shelter Operations Manager regarding unusual activities, significant problems or concerns
  • Participate in collaborative discussions on operational issues and plan/participate in team building activities with ACES staff
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and uncluttered environment; sweep, take out trash, wash windows, etc.
  • Assist staff, clients, and volunteers in a positive and respectful manner as a representative of KHS
  • Other duties as assigned by Senior Shelter Operations Manager

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Minimum 1 year experience working in a shelter setting
  • Basic to intermediate computer skills with the ability to prepare reports and maintain an efficient records system
  • Exceptional organizational, analytical, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
  • Self-directed with ability to work independently/meet deadlines in a fast paced work environment with little direct supervision
  • Ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with people of all backgrounds and personalities
  • Humane attitude towards animals
  • Must be able to effectively restrain dogs in excess of 100lbs
  • Ability to manage the emotional aspect of end of life services and humane euthanasia, and support staff in high-emotion circumstances
  • Accept, support, and represent KHS core values, programs, policies and procedures
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record and be willing to drive KHS vehicles
  • Background Check required

Physical Demands/Working Environment:

  • Individual will have periods of sitting, talking and listening
  • Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, walking, and standing while performing job functions
  • Frequently lifts, carries or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to or exceeding 50lbs
  • Includes working in an indoor desk environment as well as working with animals in a sheltering setting (indoor/outdoor) with the potential for exposure to allergens, zoonotic disease and cleaning chemicals
