Description
The Department for Public Health, Division of Maternal and Child Health works to make improvements in the health and overall wellbeing of Infants, Children, and their families. This position is in the Newborn Screening (NBS) Section and provides education and outreach regarding newborn screening (NBS) for area birthing facilities; develops and implements a plan for quality assurance to reduce the lost to follow up rate or repeat specimens; assists KY Surveillance Registry (KBSR) with chart abstractions; and performs other duties as required.
Responsibilities and Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Provide onsite review and technical assistance of metabolic and critical congenital heart defects (CCHD) protocols for area birthing facilities.
  • Collaborate with Ky Division of Lab Services, Early Hearing Detection and Intervention, and KY birth surveillance registry to develop newborn screening continuing education offerings (CEU) offerings for presentation for birthing facilities.
  • Review data of lost to follow up for repeat labs and develop strategies to reduce rate.
  • Assist with review of critical congenital heart disease data and developing strategies to further improve rate of screenings within the state.
  • Provide backup coverage for NBS follow up processes of referral and case management.
  • Perform chart abstractions as requested by the KY Birth Surveillance Registry (KBSR).
  • Assist KBSR, when available with active surveillance needs.
  • Assists as requested with quality assurance activities for KBSR.
  • Participates in activities and coordination of genetic services across programs and agencies.
  • Attend local, state, and national meetings to gather information and represent Newborn Screening program.
  • Participate in webinars and conference calls for the same purpose.

  • Ability to convey ideas to others effectively
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Demonstrate efficient computer skills for Microsoft programs: Outlook, Word, Excel
  • Analytical nursing skills with an ability to refer, educate and communicate plan of action, follow-up, and case management of newborn cases

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have four years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: A bachelor's degree in nursing will substitute for the required experience.

Working Conditions

Probationary Period
