Description
Kentucky Protection and Advocacy is the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s Disability Rights Agency and is hiring a Disability Rights Advocate for our Children and Youth Team. The mission of the agency is to promote and protect the rights of Kentuckians with disabilities.
The Disability Rights Advocate is responsible for the investigation of abuse, neglect, and exploitation and monitoring of programs under our federal authority, representing children and youth with disabilities in behavioral health settings, private childcare, youth development centers, and anywhere else children with disabilities live or receive services, including educational settings
This is a federally funded time-limited (FFTL) position. This means it is a position that is paid entirely as the result of a federal grant. The duration of employment shall not exceed the life of the federal grant that funds the position. An employee appointed to an FFTL position is required to meet the minimum requirements for the classification. Further, an employee appointed to an FFTL position is designated as an unclassified (non-merit) employee. An FFTL employee is eligible to receive benefits at the same level as a classified (merit) employee in a permanent position.
The preferred candidate will have a degree in human services or a related field and receive on-the-job training.
Responsibilities include:
  • a caseload of 25-35
  • statewide travel
  • investigation, and monitoring
  • monthly case update
  • working knowledge of laws, regulations, and process
Preferred Skills Include:
  • Good Written skills
  • Good Communication Skills
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to work independently, as well as with a team
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in special education, psychology, social work, counseling, nursing, behavioral science, rehabilitation, mental health professions or a field related specifically to people with disabilities.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Two years of experience in working with people with disabilities.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate work in law or in a field relating specifically to people with disabilities will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Work advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities will substitute for the bachelor's degree on ayear-for-year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): NONE
Working Conditions
The physical demands of this position are desk work with frequent traveling. Hazards in this position stem from inclement road conditions and potentially upset parents, clients, or others and conditions in institutional environments.
