Kent School District is Hiring a Program Specialist - Elementary English Language Arts/Social Studies - TL2206 Near Kent, WA

This position is 1.0 FTE/9 months. 

BASIC FUNCTION:

The purpose of this position is to provide support for increasing teacher capacity through tiered instruction and intervention in the area of literacy and social studies. This specialist will work with school leadership teams, tiered intervention teams, instructional coaches and teachers to implement high impact teaching strategies to close the achievement gap and increase rigor primarily in elementary classrooms and will support the implementation of literacy and social studies resources K – 5. Additionally, this position will provide teacher professional learning opportunities of core resources, intervention resources, and assessments. 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. Some incumbents may not perform all the duties listed while in other cases other duties may also be assigned.

Support the implementation and train teachers in the use of specific, approved literacy and social studies resources, high impact teaching strategies and assessments in alignment with WA State Standards. (E)

Assist teachers to implement classroom instruction based upon data analysis and progress monitoring. (E)

Coach, consult and collaborate with principals, coaches, and teachers. (E)

Assist with the creation of supplemental curriculum guides and assessments. (E)

Observe and provide feedback to teachers on instruction related to literacy and social studies. (E)

Model and/or assist with the selection and use of a range of assessment tools as a means to make sound decisions about student literacy and social studies needs. (E)

Teach demonstration lessons with students for teachers to observe. (E)

Conduct meetings with leadership teams and teachers to examine student work and assist with monitoring student progress. (E)

Keep accurate inventory of curricular materials, including organizing, ordering and sending materials to buildings as needed. (E)

Manage online literacy and social studies web-based tools. (E)

OTHER JOB DUTIES:

  • Serve as member of the Teaching and Learning Community of the district; performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position as assigned.
  • Coordinate special programs as needed and work collaboratively with other district office communities to ensure a comprehensive and coherent continuum of services for students.
  • Serve as a program spokesperson to staff, parents, and community members; serve as liaison among parents, teachers, patrons, students, and district administration as needed.
  • Serve on a variety of committees and work on special projects.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Completion of an accredited teacher training program as determined by the Washington State Department of Education.
  • Minimum of five years of successful certificated experience teaching at the elementary level.
  • Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Knowledge of district goals and initiatives, and a strong background in elementary literacy and social studies instruction.
  • Knowledge and experience working with structured literacy, DIBELS, i-Ready and other educational software that can be used to assess and provide literacy instruction.
  • Experience using and training others to use current elementary literacy and social studies resources (core and supplemental).
  • Experience working as an instructional coach in an elementary building.

Employment eligibility that may include fingerprints, health (TB), and/or other employment clearance.

Must have valid driver’s license and automobile available for use. Must be willing to attend evening and weekend meetings.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

  • WA State K-6 Literacy and Social Studies Standards.
  • High impact teaching strategies for closing the achievement gap.
  • How to use core instructional materials, intervention resources and other instructional technology resources to meet the educational needs of students.

Ability to:

  • Use educational software and technology resources, such as Think Central and SchoolPace, as well as Office 365 programs, including Excel, Word, Teams, and OneNote.
  • Analyze and use data to provide quality instruction using a continuous cycle of improvement.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

The incumbent in this position collaborates with and supports central office administrators, principals and staff regarding student literacy, social studies, program development and the selection of appropriate supplies, materials, equipment, hardware, and software to support the program. Working with administrators, principals, department chairpersons, and staff is also required in the implementation of curriculum programs and instructional strategies. This specialist may also interact with parents, patrons, staff, and students through service on various committees to receive recommendations for the development and revision of related programs.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Environment:

The daily activities are performed in an office or school setting with visits to schools and classrooms. The work may require moving, lifting, and storing of materials and equipment. Frequent interruptions occur; visual and mental concentration on details and precision is required. Frequent early morning and late afternoon/evening meetings occur.

Physical demands:

  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching, and reaching to retrieve and maintain files and records.
  • Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office equipment, computer keyboard, and other equipment necessary to complete the required duties.
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone.
  • Visual ability to read, and to prepare/process documents and to monitor various services and personnel.
  • Sitting for extended periods.
  • Standing for extended periods.
  • Walking over rough or uneven surfaces.
  • Climbing, occasional use of stepladders.
  • Physical activity may be required, which could include moderate lifting.
