Kent City Community Schools is Hiring a Migrant Education Program Recruiter - Summer Program Near Kent, MI

JOB SUMMARY
Accurately identifies and recruits the eligible migrant students and out-of-school youth; works to meet migrant families regarding students’ academic needs


QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma.
  • Bilingual spoken and written (English & Spanish). Bicultural preferred.
  • Familiarity with migrant and immigrant issues and challenges, locally, regionally, and nationally.
  • Good communication skills and ability to relate to a variety of people in multiple situations – office, fields, community agencies, school personnel, students, and/or parents, etc.
  • Knowledge of local resources – social and health service agencies, e.g.
  • Flexibility in schedule and approach to work assignments.
  • Knowledge of the geographical area of Kent and Ottawa Counties
  • Possesses own transportation.


PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Learns and keeps abreast of all federal regulations pertaining to the Migrant Education Program (MEP). Completes state and local recruiter training and attends recruiter meetings. Follows all procedures in the Kent City migrant identification and recruitment handbook and directives of state and federal Migrant programs.
  • Identifies and recruits program participants: Works with school staff, parents, and community contacts to identify migrant individuals and documents student eligibility.
  • Maintains appropriate records of recruitment and other activities: Correctly enters student information into databases, and keeps records of services provided. Maintains data records of recruitment contacts including outreach locations, producer/grower/crew leader contacts, community resources, etc.
  • Works with Out-of-School Youth (OSY): Identifies OSY educational and social service needs. With Coordinator and OSY, develops and implements OSY education plans. Connects OSY to appropriate service providers – educational, health and social services.
  • Acts as liaison between program and community. Raises awareness and visibility of MEP and the migrant farm worker community with area agencies.
  • Collaborates with other area MEPs.
  • Completes other duties that may be assigned by the Migrant Coordinator or Federal Programs Director.


KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of and ability to communicate in Spanish and English languages.
  • Knowledge of federal migrant program policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of office procedures and operation of office equipment.


SKILLS

  • Communication skills to serve as a link between migrant families, school personnel, community organizations, and employers with sensitivity to culture, respect for people and activities taking place in homes or places of business, and in accordance with confidentiality policies.
  • Coordination skills to balance the unique needs of migrant families and facilitate services among a variety of providers.
  • Leadership skills to motivate students and parents.
  • Problem-solving skills to address the unique needs of migrant students.
  • Organization and planning skills to identify, recruit, serve, and track student data in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Software/word processing skills to input student records, write articles and correspondence, design recruitment materials, and communicate with others. Familiarity with computer, printer, scanner and fax machines.
  • Ability to work closely with others as part of a team. Works independently and cooperatively.


WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Job is performed in a variety of environments including office, schools, homes, housing developments, farms, packing houses, community agencies, and other locations throughout the community at a variety of hours, including weekends and evenings. Carries a cell phone and lets office staff know of location before leaving.
  • Schedule is irregular at times, and flexibility is necessary.
  • Carries and delivers books and other materials to home and school sites.
  • Often must enter areas of rough terrain, irregular surfaces, and machinery.


TERM OF EMPLOYMENT

Will receive training on migrant student identification and best migrant recruitment practices.
Pay is based on State Allocation - Hours per week may vary.
