Description
SUMMARY: The Dean of Students is responsible for attendance, discipline, safety and related student personnel services at the school building. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions consistently and to the satisfaction of the employer. RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Assumes responsibilities for various pupil services within the school and works in coordination with community agencies, as assigned by the school principal. 2. Supervises student behavior before, during and after school hours to include implementing school and district policies, rules and regulations. 3. Maintains a safe school environment before, during and after school hours to include implementing school and district policies, rules and regulations. 4. Handles office referrals for assigned grade levels to include providing feedback to referring teachers. 5. Performs student conduct investigations in conjunction and cooperation with the school resource officer and parent liaison. 6. Meets with teachers and parents and/or guardians, when necessary, to include performing home visits. 7. Presides over and presents student information sessions for students, staff, and parents. 8. Provides direct student services including, but not limited to, the explanation of and assistance in accepting the consequences of their actions; acknowledging their feelings and attitudes expressed; and referring students to Crisis Student Intervention team, as needed. 9. Composes written reports including but not limited to administrative reviews and data analysis. 10. Assists counselors, teachers and school administration in the implementation of PBIS. 11. Documents and ensures accuracy of behavior records, student contact records, and family contact/home visits for data-based decision making. 12. Participates in the recommendation, evaluation, and assignment of students to educational programs or counseling services, when necessary. 13. Prepares paperwork for referral programs. 14. Adjusts student schedules in coordination with teachers, as needed. 15. Facilities relationship between building administration and student groups (e.g. student council, clubs, etc.). 16. Attends administrative review meetings, as necessary. 17. Participates in district committees as a building/district representative, as needed. 18. Follows a personal plan for professional development and actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally through membership in professional organizations, participation in conferences, and attendance of appropriate conventions and workshops. 19. Performs all other duties as required. SKILLS: 1. Knowledge of the promises and challenges of urban education. 2. Knowledge and understanding of adolescent characteristics and behavior. 3. Maintains current knowledge of gang verbiage. 4. Effective and efficient time and task management skills including planning, managing and organizing. 5. Leadership skills including creativity, flexibility and resourcefulness. 6. Skilled at facilitation, consensus-building and conflict resolution. 7. Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. 8. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. INTERPERSONAL QUALITIES: 1.
