Overview

Kemin is currently seeking a Campus Groundskeeper to join our team in Des Moines! This person is responsible for helping to maintain the general aesthetics of the campus grounds and buildings. This includes performing daily and frequent checks of grounds to ensure general campus aesthetics are kept up to standards, including grass, trees, vegetation, buildings, parking, sidewalks, gates, and ponds. This person will also identify security issues and/or breaches, order and ensure supplies are stocked and in place, and maintain a current inventory record.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge in plant and flower care, lawn and landscape, operating equipment for snow removal, and able to use a variety of hand and power tools. The hours for this position are Monday-Friday, 6:00AM-2:15PM.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in maintaining all planting beds and trees.
  • Make reccomendations for watering, disease control, and fertilizing.
  • Operate lawn care equipment in a timely manner.
  • Ability to operate forklift, skid loader, mowers, snow removal equipment and other manufacturing equipment. 
  • General maintenance on buildings and grounds (i.e. pond, fountain, walkways, toilets, lights etc.) 
  • Operate snow plow and other winter weather removal equipment in a timely manner. 
  • Ensure a clean and well-manicured grounds area.
  • Regularly monitoring and recording utility meters. 
  • Support Kemin staff by assisting with hazardous waste removal, setting up for meetings, celebrations, and other events, ordering supplies, stocking water, pop, coffee, safety glasses and paper for the printers. 
  • Cleaning up debris. 
  • Ability to operate a variety of hand tools, power tools and perform various maintenance tasks. 
  • Light interior painting and building maintenance. 
  • Ensure a safe environment for employees and guest. 
  • Work with other departments such as, but not limited to R&D Staff, Administrative Staff, Shipping/Receiving, Warehousing, outside vendors, and company customers. 
  • Follow test protocol provided by engineering or supervisory personnel. 
  • Must take careful consideration when performing job duties. Expected to follow instructions, specific procedures and protocols, and adhere to policies to ensure the highest quality of product and a safe work environment. 
  • Ability to maintain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator License.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

  • Education and Experience:
    • High School diploma, or equivalent, with 0-5 years of applicable experience or
    •  2 or 4-year degree, preferrably in Horticulture 
  • Plant and Tree expertise, including thorough knowledge in plant health and plant care
  • Grounds experience
  • Obtain and maintain a Driver’s License
  • Ability to read, write, handle basic math problems
  • Hazardous material knowledge
  • Safety/ OSHA training
  • First aid/CPR/AED training
  • GMP/ISO background
  • Must be proficient in English
  • Mechanically inclined
  • Problem solving skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Must have a good attendance record, ability to work with minimum supervision, and a high level of accountability for their work
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders
  • Proactive, self-directed individual
