Title: Swim Instructor 

Position Summary:  
The Y is seeking Swim Instructors to work in their busy Aquatics Center. In this role you will instruct group classes in a safe, enjoyable, culturally aware, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures with advocacy for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Essential Functions of the Swim Instructor 

• Helps members and participants develop proper swimming techniques in a safe and positive manner. 
• Builds meaningful relationships with YMCA members, participants, volunteers, and guest while exemplifying the Y’s commitment to DEI and the four core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. 
• Responds to all member and community inquiries in a timely manner.
• Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six model” (Prevent, Recognize, Activate EAP, Rescue, Care, Report). 
• Knows, understands, and consistently apply safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. 
• Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code. 
• Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.

Requirements

Qualifications: 

• Must be a minimum of 18 years of age 
• Required certifications include: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen 
• Current YMCA certified Swim Instructor/Trainer, YMCA Water Safety Instructor/Trainer. (The YMCA will assist with this training, to be achieved within the first year of employment.) 
• Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness 

Physical Demands: 

• Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. 
• Remain alert with no lapses in consciousness. 
• Meet strength and lifting requirements – must be able to lift 60 pounds alone, may request assistance to pull victims out of the pool. 
• Must be able to vocalize instructions to bystanders in case of emergency.
