General Summary

The Director, Legal provides legal advice and support on a variety of legal matters for the business including intellectual property and brand protection, privacy, commercial agreements, corporate matters and compliance, oversees a small team of legal paraprofessionals, and has day-to-day responsibility for managing the legal department under the direction of the Chief Legal Officer.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Leads and manages an efficient and client-service oriented internal legal team.
  • Provides legal advice and support to global business teams on a wide range and scope of legal matters.
  • Leads the development and execution of the organization's intellectual property strategy across relevant substantive areas such as design patents, utility patents, trade dress and trademarks. Balances broad protection with cost effectiveness in patent and trademark filings.
  • Partners with other Legal and DTC team members to improve brand protection strategies and efforts, including on global marketplaces. Stays up to date on industry trends in global brand protection and enforcement.
  • Prepares and reviews documents and policies and provides interpretations and recommendations to ensure organizational compliance with evolving global privacy regulations.
  • Drafts and reviews commercial agreements and other contracts, including those that contain complex IP and privacy matters such as license agreements, vendor/service provider agreements, data transfer and data protection agreements.
  • Supports entity management and governance-related needs of domestic and international subsidiaries.
  • Recommends where appropriate the use and selection of outside counsel. Manages and collaborates with outside counsel and other experts.
  • Reviews marketing assets to ensure proper use of company trademarks and other intellectual property assets, avoid infringement of the intellectual property rights of third parties, and comply with advertising and marketing laws and regulations.
  • Develops guidelines and conducts trainings for internal and external stakeholders about relevant legal issues.
  • Works with Chief Legal Officer and Finance team to set legal budget; has primary responsibility for managing legal spend and prioritizing projects.
  • Provides occasional legal support for affiliated entities on an as-needed basis as identified by the Chief Legal Officer.

Minimum Qualifications

  • JD from a nationally accredited and recognized law school with strong academic record.
  • Member, in good standing, of at least one US State Bar (Oregon preferred).
  • Six (6) years of experience.
  • Combined experience at a top law firm and as in-house legal counsel required.
  • Experience working for a global company focused on manufacturing and/or sale (including ecommerce) of physical products preferred.
  • Proven ability to design, implement and manage intellectual property development and brand protection programs at a global scale.
  • Proven ability to manage a budget.
  • Familiarity with GDPR, CCPA, as well as state, federal and regional consumer protection and privacy laws.
  • Sound risk assessment capabilities in rapidly evolving regulated areas.
  • Strong business acumen.
  • Ability and willingness to dive into unfamiliar areas and learn quickly.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently on multiple projects in a busy work environment,
  • Ability to partner cross functionally and serve as a go-to partner for fellow peers in the company and legal department.
  • Strong verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Ability to distill complex legal concepts into simple, actionable recommendations.
  • Ability to interact effectively at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to form strong internal relationships and influence across departments.
  • Ability to function with a high degree of integrity and professionalism.

Travel Required

Base Salary: $175,000 - $200,000 yearly
This range represents the low and high end of the anticipated base salary range for this position. The actual base salary will depend on numerous factors such as: experience, knowledge and skills, and location.
