The Wound Management Program Nurse Coordinator has the responsibility and accountability for development and facilitation of all clinical aspects of the skin injury prevention program. This position will be responsible for ensuring that all relevant clinical policies and practices are consistent with requirements of all regulatory bodies and industry best practices. They are also responsible for identifying opportunities for and leading organizational and system change; leading the advancement of the nursing profession; functioning as an expert clinician and patient advocate; coordinating and measuring nursing efforts to improve quality care; and applying evidence in practice designed to improve quality of care and health outcomes.

Essential Duties:

  • Patient Sphere 1. Clinical resource with staff on management of complex cases. 2. Make rounds for the purpose of monitoring and ensuring quality patient care. 3. Utilize system resources to meet the needs of the patient. 4. Utilize advanced practice knowledge of health assessment, pathophysiology, and pharmacology through the continuum of care. 5. Lead development of evidence-based plans for measuring individual, family, community, and population needs.
  • Nurse Sphere 6. Collaborate with Nurse Educators and others on content and operational design of orientation, clinical competency, and other clinical educational program development. 7. Support independent nursing practice of professional nurses through collaborative, consultative, and role modeling activities. 8. Provide direct clinical coaching to nursing staff. 9. Represent department on hospital wide committees. 10. Maintain membership on the APN shared governance council. 11. Provide recommendation for formal and informal education topics to improve healthcare outcomes and participates in continuing education of nurses. 12. Develop goals, objectives and lesson plans and conducts clinical specialty educational offerings. 13. Facilitate teams to address ethical concerns, risks or considerations, benefits and outcomes of patient care. 14. Communicate directly with nursing staff to determine which strategies would best meet patient’s needs. 15. Promote competent, compassionate and professional nursing care for patients and families. 16. Evaluate effect of practice on health care outcomes within the 3 spheres and communicate benefits to nursing leadership. 17. Contribute to the advancement of the profession as a whole by disseminating outcomes. 18. Represent the hospital at national, state, and local professional organizations. 19. Identify areas of inquiry and participate in conduct and implementation of nursing research. 20. Lead efforts in focusing on issues that impact the patient to optimize clinical outcomes. 21. Mentor nurses to translate research into practice. 22. Provide leadership in promoting interprofessional collaboration to implement evidence-based care. 23. Attend education training, in-services, workshops, and seminars and disseminates pertinent information. 24. Recognize behaviors and implements strategies to optimize teamwork and professional behavior. 25. Facilitate the acquisition of advanced clinical skills in staff nurses, graduate students, and other nursing students as necessary in coordination with the Education Department through role modeling, practice, and consultations in the clinical setting. 26. Identify and communicate learning opportunities available for staff within the hospital and community.
  • System Sphere 27. Promote system-wide standards, policies, and protocols. E 28. Independently coordinates functions activities of the Program as defined by the department director 29. Ensures that Program is in compliance with local, state and federal rules, recommendations, and regulations (Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS),Condition of Participation (CoP), the Joint Commission 30. Facilitate the incorporation of evidence-based practices, products, and technology into clinical practice, policies, procedures, and protocols. 31. Consider fiscal and budgetary implications in decision making regarding practice/system modifications and conducts or participates in cost/benefit and cost avoidance analysis of programs, processes, and technologies. 32. Provide leadership in identifying and analyzing gaps and trends in data specific to outcomes of care. 33. Participate in interprofessional rounds. 34. Assess impact of environmental/system factors on care. 35. Promote a practice climate conducive to providing ethical care. 36. Lead/participate in development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical practices. 37. Provide leadership to address threats to safety and quality; creates therapeutic health-promoting environments. 38. Evaluate delivery of care. 39. Use patient data and information technology to enhance safety and monitor health outcomes. 40. Build and maintains positive collaborative professional relationships with hospital and medical staff. 41. Ensure that the clinical specialty is in compliance with local, state and federal rules, recommendations, Title 22, regulations Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), The Joint Commission, and other regulatory bodies.
  • Other 42. Perform other duties as necessary for the smooth operation of the department and the hospital.
  • QUALITY, SAFETY, AND PATIENT EXPERIENCE 43. Differentiate between outcomes that require care process modifications at the individual patient level and those requiring modification at the system level and implement changes based on analysis and evaluation of outcomes of care. 44. Evaluate impact of interventions and nursing practice changes on systems of care using nurse-sensitive outcomes.

Required Qualifications:

  • Req Master's degree Nursing Degree in Nursing from an accredited School of Registered Nursing.
  • Req 5 years 5 years acute care nursing experience required.
  • Req Demonstrates ability to effectively work with physicians, staff, and patients.
  • Req Demonstrates ability to utilize effective, appropriate and diplomatic oral and written communication skills.
  • Req Demonstrates ability to work independently with minimal direction and supervision.
  • Req Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office as well as Internet and access and utilization.
  • Req Ability to participate in and utilize research for improvement of patient-care practices.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pref 2 years A minimum of 2 years formal or informal experience in an educator role preferred
  • Pref Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
  • Pref Clinical Laboratory Scientist - CLS California Clinical Nurse Specialist Certification, preferred

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Req Registered Nurse - RN (CA Board of Registered Nursing)
  • Req Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)
  • Req Specialty Certification Specialty certification in wounds required (preferably CWOCN,). If no certificate upon hire, one must obtain within 18 months of hire, and maintain by renewal
The annual base salary range for this position is $95,680.00 - $158,230.00. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
