Kings Against Violence Initiative, Inc. (KAVI) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) youth-serving organization with a mission to prevent and eliminate interpersonal violence from the lives of young people through advocacy, peer leadership, community mobilization, and social justice.
KAVI promotes community wellness and healing by operating high-impact youth violence prevention and intervention programs in Central Brooklyn. Our programs take place in hospital-based, school, and community settings. We also work with a broad range of partners to do community strengthening and healing programs.

KAVI is seeking a qualified Safe Passage Specialist as a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of students traveling to and from school, particularly in areas prone to violence and unsafe conditions. This position involves implementing and coordinating a Safe Passage Program (SPP) to establish secure routes and address various forms of violence and safety concerns faced by students and their families within the communities of KAVI School sites.

Job responsibilities include:
  • Attend team and staff meetings with your School Programs Manager, and School Violence Prevention Specialist.
  • Safe Route Establishment: Identify, establish, and maintain safe routes around the school community, considering public areas frequented by youth, such as libraries, recreation centers, places of worship, public transportation hubs, and businesses.
  • Safety Advocacy: Collaborate with stakeholders including parents, teachers, school administration, law enforcement, businesses, local governmental agencies, and community-based organizations to advocate for greater enforcement of traffic and safety laws. Explore strategies to create safer streets and public spaces for students.
  • Community Engagement: Build partnerships with community resources to establish linkages to after-school programs promoting educational activities, organized sports, and cultural awareness. Facilitate positive youth programming and community involvement to reduce the likelihood of youth involvement in gang activities.

Qualifications:
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Highly developed ability for problem-solving
  • Knowledgeable in crisis intervention principles and practices
  • Ability to maintain integrity and professional rapport towards students, school staff, and other KAVI team members
  • Knowledge of the Criminal Justice system
  • A desire for professional growth
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team
  • Experience working with youth in urban or underserved communities, with a focus on violence prevention and community advocacy.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols, traffic laws, and resources for at-risk youth.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic environment.
  • Sensitivity to cultural diversity and an understanding of the socio-economic factors impacting students' lives.

Possible Shifts: Vary per site; generally, Safe Passage Specialist work
at least 10 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Saturday programs operate quarterly.
