Leave Position; 0.6 to 1.0 FTE based on ability to meet job responsibilities Start date: Immediate Upon Hiring through 22-23 school year Burke's is an independent K-8 gender-inclusive all-girls’ school located on a 3.5-acre campus in San Francisco. Burke’s is one of California’s leading elementary schools with a 112-year tradition of educational excellence. Our mission is to educate, encourage, and empower girls. The school combines strong academic and co-curricular programs with an emphasis on project-based learning and personal growth in a diverse and inclusive community. We emphasize the development of fundamental and higher-level critical thinking skills in an atmosphere of creativity, exploration, academic rigor, and joyful learning. Position Description Burke’s seeks an educator to teach Upper School Music in grades 5-8 in a manner aligned with the mission of the school in order to further develop students’ musical abilities and appreciation of the vital role music plays in their lives. Fifth- and sixth-grade music classes build on the Lower School program. Seventh-grade students have music as an art elective, and in eighth-grade students have commenced their class musical to be performed in June. The music teacher co-leads the musical with the Upper School Drama teacher. Additionally, this role is critical to supporting annual, end-of-year celebrations for the eighth-grade class such as Pansy Day and Graduation. In addition to teaching music, responsibilities include advising a group of students to support social-emotional learning and strong learning habits. Job Responsibilities include: Teaching Upper School Music (Grades 5-8) & Advisory; this includes: Reporting on student progress using checklist/narrative report cards Teaching music classes in grades 5-8 Preparing advisees for and supporting them in student-led parent conferences Accompanying advisees on outdoor education trips, both day and overnight Teaching role is 0.8 FTE and advisory is 0.2 FTE Communication: Effective communication with colleagues in support of a collegial and collaborative professional community Timely and supportive communication with students, parents, and caregivers to foster a strong partnership with families Collaboration: Participate in regular team meetings including advising team as well as attending weekly faculty meetings Contribute to curriculum development and revision Collaboratively plan all-school assemblies with Lower School Music Teacher Supervisory duties as needed Qualifications & Skills Below are the personal and professional qualities that we believe are important for the success of the person in this role. Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent, in related field Experience teaching, preferably at middle-school level Demonstrated confidence in: differentiation of instruction cultural competency innovative use of technology in instruction Understanding by Design approach to curriculum design (preferred) Commitment to: equitable and anti-racist teaching practices modeling lifelong learning Understanding of, and appreciation for: the social-emotional development of adolescent girls providing opportunities for learning through play by inviting creativity, imagination, curiosity, and tinkering into the classroom Passion for teaching music and a desire to be a part of a gender-inclusive girls’ school Flexible Creative Collaborative Possess a growth mindset and openness to feedback Compensation Burke’s offers competitive compensation based on prior experience and position requirements and established salary scale of $62,000 - $139,548 with additional stipends for advanced degrees (prorated based on percentage of FTE).
