Kansas Fiber Network is Hiring an Outside Plant Engineer I Near Overland Park, KS

Kansas Fiber Network (KFN) provides mission-critical bandwidth to customers throughout the mid-west. KFN is looking for an Outside Plant Engineer to join our team who will be responsible for detailed engineering tasks including analyzing, evaluating, designing, planning, estimating, and managing outside plant projects to include new fiber construction, relocations, maintenance, and emergency restoration with assistance from senior staff. Responsibilities also include, but are not limited to, creating project cost estimates, performing field/site surveys, completion/management of permits, bid solicitation for OSP construction, management of OSP construction and quality control, project documentation and material management.

Qualifications:

  • College degree and 1-2 years related OSP experience; or 3 years equivalent related Engineering/Technical experience; or a combination of education and related Engineering/Technical experience required.
  • Some understanding of telecommunications industry such as fiber design, construction, project management, permitting, etc.
  • Ability to read, understand, and modify engineering drawings. Experience with fiber design software such as ArcGIS, Mapcom M4, GE Smallworld, etc.
  • Some knowledge of one or more engineering disciplines and vendor equipment
  • Some knowledge of accepted engineering practices
  • Basic computer software knowledge to include Microsoft Office
  • Basic analytical skills
  • Ability to prioritize projects
  • Ability to make sound technical decisions
  • Ability to read and understand highway/road prints, be able to identify conflicts with existing outside plant facilities, select routing of lines and equipment required for work projects
  • US resident with authorization to work for any employer without visa sponsorship now or in the future
  • Valid state driver’s license

Essential Duties and Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform route analysis and site surveys to develop aerial and underground fiber route design.
  • Develop engineering specifications and/or construction drawings for assigned projects per KFN OSP engineering guidelines.
  • Utilize Mapcom M4, Bluebeam, Visio professional, and other software to create OSP project documents.
  • Develop scope, budget, and schedules for OSP projects.
  • Perform construction and maintenance on OSP infrastructure according to KFN and industry standards.
  • Monitor and control expenses within allocated budget.
  • Complete assigned projects within defined scope and schedule.
  • Provide required project status updates.
  • Respond to emergency conditions such as fiber damages, power failures and other disasters.
  • Perform routine inspections of OSP network.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Expected progression to OSP Engineer II within 2 years based on demonstrated professional development.
