Position Summary:

This Technology Support Consultant I position is located in Topeka, at the Eisenhower State Office Building, and is within the Office of Information Technology Services. This position performs routine technical work advising and assisting computer users in a distributed computing environment, supports computer and storage hardware, software, and commercial office automation software packages, and may assist in the planning, installation, and operation of microcomputer local area (LAN) or wide area (WAN) networks or providing all technical support for a limited network requiring minor maintenance. The Technology Support Consultant I also conducts in-house training on hardware and software products.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provides technical assistance to both end users and Bureau personnel. Tasks include repairing, maintaining, and installing computer hardware and peripherals while also overseeing software installations, updates, and troubleshooting efforts.
  • Maintains records of hardware and software inventory, responses to help desk tickets, changes to system and media sanitation.
  • Performs troubleshooting tasks such as creating and presenting documentation to users and supervisors for the solution after research, troubleshooting various software packages, and following and recording troubleshooting steps laid out by supervisor.
  • Provides F5/VPN Access/Wireless Network support, including working with users to make sure they can connect and have the required rights and troubleshooting any problems a user may be experiencing with VPN or wireless access.
  • Occasionally travels within the state to assist at different sites.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Six months of experience advising and assisting computer users in a distributed computing environment.
  • Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency. Transcripts are required for education to be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in managing and troubleshooting servers, network systems, software, and hardware to address complex IT issues.
  • Familiarity with the KDOT’s core IT tools and platforms, such as specific operating systems, help desk software, and cybersecurity solutions.
  • Strong analytical abilities to diagnose and resolve technical problems efficiently and effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to provide high-quality support to users and maintain user satisfaction.
  • Capability to lead or contribute significantly to IT projects, including planning, execution, and coordination with other teams.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Licensing & Certification:

  • Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), A , or Network Certification is preferred.
