Kalamazoo Nature Center is Hiring a Visitor Services Host Near Kalamazoo, MI

Position Title: Visitor Services Host

Supervisor: Administration Manager

Classification: Part Time (25-30 hours per week), Regular, Non-Exempt

Compensation: $10.50 per hour
The Kalamazoo Nature Center (KNC) is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to create relationships and experiences that welcome and inspire people to discover, enjoy, value, and care for nature. Summary of Position:
The Guest Services Host provides excellent customer service to our members, visitors, volunteers, and staff. This is a public-facing job that requires strong multitasking skills and level-headed decision-making. The Guest Services Host is greets visitors, answers the phone, runs cash register for purchases, sells memberships, and keeps inventory on stock of gift shop merchandise.
Duties:
  • Keep up to date regarding events and programs, ticket prices, membership levels and prices, general offerings, organization policies and procedures, and be able to communicate this information to visitors, volunteers and staff.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to anyone visiting or communicating with KNC. Greet all visitors upon arrival.
  • Ensure all needs and expectations are being met during check-in to their event, program, or daily visit.
  • Answer all incoming phone calls to KNC, answer questions with resources provided or direct to the corresponding staff.
  • Know the physical attributes and general background about the Nature Center in order to answer questions, give directions and as appropriate, offer suggestions to the visitor/phone caller to ensure a positive and fulfilling experience.
  • Maintain record keeping for visitor admission taken at the Welcome Station and GS Desk.
  • Maintain a clean and neat appearance for all lobby areas during shift. This includes but is not limited to; sweeping floors, cleaning counters, emptying waste stream, restocking brochures and marketing materials, cleaning and restocking the gift shop and maintaining a clean GS Desk appearance.
  • Maintain daily cash deposits and reporting of the GS Desk and Welcome Station.
  • Assist with program registration by understanding current programs, answering questions, gathering and recording data from our visitors and providing information to the registrar.
  • Assist with purchasing, inventory and sales in the gift shop with ordinance from the Guest Services Manager.
  • Recommends changes to procedures to improve visitor experience.
  • Provide training, guidance, supervision, and support for staff and volunteers within the GS Desk/Lobby area and Welcome Station where needed. Ensure that operations procedures and policies are followed.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Sales and Membership Support:
  • Provide pre-sales support by responding to in-person or phone requests regarding membership levels and benefits.
  • Manage in-person membership sales on the point-of-sales system.
  • Complete training and offer assistance while maintaining proficiency in Double Knot POS software and associated programs, and products used by the Kalamazoo Nature Center. Ensure timely, accurate entries, transactions, and reports.
  • Assist the Development Operations Manager in the completion and maintenance of member and donor records and activities within Double Knot database systems.
  • Adhere to standards set forth by the Guest Services Manager, Development Operations Manager and KNC regarding the use of Double Knot and associated programs and products.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Team Support:
  • Maintain proper knowledge of all Gift Shop merchandise, procedures and policies.
  • Maintain proficiency in the use of all required sales software, hardware and equipment.
  • Work with other department staff where necessary to implement promotions, partnerships, and communications that promote membership and visitor experience.
  • Greet visitors for programs and events and answer basic directional questions. Keep in touch with the program and events staff during regular business hours, while set up for daytime or after hour events is happening at KNC when possible.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to handle stressful situations

  • Ability to learn a multi-line phone system proficiently
  • Ability to think on their feet and professionally resolve new and unexpected situations.
  • Superior interpersonal skills to foster effective working relationships at all levels

  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule, including weekends.
  • Must maintain confidentiality
  • Must be flexible with the ability to work independently and as a team member

  • Demonstrated management of conflict and ability to act in a professional manner
  • Ability to work with a wide diversity of individuals
  • Able to work indoors and occasionally outdoors in varying weather conditions and temperatures
  • Familiarity to use computers and have general office equipment skills (Windows, Microsoft 365, and Database operations).
Qualifications:
  • Must have a High School Diploma
  • Retail/cashier/customer service experience preferred
  • Database experience is preferred
  • Able to lift up to 25 pounds, use a ladder safely and stand for long periods of time
  • Must pass a pre-employment background check
