In 2024, the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts (KIA), a leading nonprofit art museum and school, will began a yearlong Centennial celebration with various exhibitions, events, and programs to commemorate its 100th anniversary. Since 1924, the KIA has offered art classes, exhibitions, lectures, events, activities and a permanent collection. The KIA's mission is to cultivate the creation and appreciation of the visual arts in West Michigan. We believe the visual arts are for everyone. They inspire, fulfill, and transform. 
Under the direction of the Senior Operations Officer, the Gallery Attendant will provide a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for KIA employees, faculty, volunteers, and visitors. Position serves to ensure protection of KIA buildings, parking lots, grounds, and other assets.
This position offers full and part-time work schedules at an hourly rate of $15/hr., and requires the ability to work weekends and evening hours. In general, the needs for coverage of non-traditional hours are known in advance. The KIA offers compensation and benefits package that includes medical, dental, life insurance, long-term and short-term disability, and retirement program for eligible employees. 
Responsibilities: 
  • Demonstrates the highest level of customer service, remaining professional, personable, and engaging to all museum visitors
  • Ensures that our visitor experience aligns with the museum’s brand and mission
  • Opens and closes the museum galleries 
  • Protects the artwork by continuously observing visitors’ behavior while circulating in specific areas or galleries, including monitoring for restricted items and touching of art
  • Maintains a secure and safe environment for staff, visitors, and the protection of museum assets
  • Promptly reports security incidents and emergencies to the Safety and Security Officer on duty responding and assisting as needed
  • Remains knowledgeable about exhibitions, the collection, public programs and events, and museum resources and promote all to visitors 
  • Assists in wayfinding, providing directions and suggested routes of travel
  • Provides, as needed, additional support to the Gallery Shop as well as the Mary & Edwin Meader Fine Arts Library including shift coverage.
  • Attends all mandatory department meetings/ training
  • Works special events, performances, opening receptions, public programs, and other programs as assigned
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Senior Operations Officer, Lead Receptionist, or designee
Qualifications and Physical Job Requirements:
Previous customer service or security experience preferred. Knowledge of American Sign Language and/or multilingual a plus.
While performing this job, the individual must be able to regularly move about inside and outside the museum, operate machinery, ascend/descend a ladder, communicate information and ideas so others will understand, exchange accurate information in these situations; observe details at close range, move objects weighing up to 30 lbs., regularly. Individual may be exposed to adverse weather conditions and occasional loud noise. Must be available to work weekends, evenings, or be on-call as a regular part of the job.
