K-State Student Union is Hiring an Assistant Manager/Bowling and Recreation Near Manhattan, KS

Hours: Wednesday-Saturday; 1-7 pm; events, tournaments, and leagues as necessary.

SUMMARY OF POSITION

Responsible for supporting the operation of the Union’s bowling and recreational facility, to include overseeing staff, ensuring customer satisfaction, maintaining equipment, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations. This position works closely with the Manager/Bowling and Recreation to ensure smooth operations and a positive experience for customers.

KEY FUNCTIONS

Bowling and Recreation-Specific

50%: Assist supervisor with the promotion, organization, and scheduling of open and league bowling, tournaments, and special events. Inform league members of requirements. Prepare and distribute announcements of league activities, collect member fees, and distribute tournament prizes.

Work in coordination with supervisor to inspect alley to ensure equipment is operative, following established safety procedures. Ensure maintenance is performed on all bowling-related equipment. Ensure appropriate and adequate bowling equipment and supplies are available. Address any operational challenges or emergencies that arise during shift, such as equipment malfunctions or customer disputes. Serve as backup to supervisor to teach University for Man (UFM) beginning and intermediate bowling courses throughout the year.

Support supervisor to ensure appropriate customer usage of billiard tables, video games, cornhole, and associated equipment. Ensure equipment is well maintained and operative. Coordinate party room reservations and activities.

Departmental Operations

30%: Promote an exceptional customer service experience for all bowling and recreation center patrons. Assist with management of cash register activities to ensure the accuracy of transactions and accountability of funds. Follow documented procedures to perform opening and closing of cash register.

Maintain complete inventory of bowling and billiard-related accessories/equipment, food and beverage, and other supplies. Order supplies as necessary and within budget. Work in coordination with supervisor to ensure fiscal responsibility and accountability through coordination, preparation, and management of annual unit budget. Assist with administrative duties such as maintaining records, preparing reports, and communicating with management, staff, and vendors, as directed.

Research best practices, trends, innovative ideas and marketing of the bowling and recreation center. Coordinate bowling and recreation media exposure and marketing plan by working with the Union marketing department.

Contribute to hiring, training, supervising, and assessing the performance of bowling and recreation student employees. Develop student work schedules. Support work flow for unit. Research, analyze, and report on special projects as directed. Serve as a member on internal and external committees. Remain current and competent by developing professional contacts with colleagues and seeking out professional development opportunities. Perform other duties as assigned and instructed.

Food and Beverage-Specific

20%: Ensure compliance with all U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations related to bowling center food and beverage operations, to include Hunt Brothers Pizza. Comply with Kansas Department of Revenue’s Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control regulations related to the selling of alcohol. Maintain a clean and safe work environment in accordance with established health and safety standards. Monitor food quality. Ensure all food service standards and audits are met. Follow up on inspection findings and implement necessary changes. Identify and resolve potential safety hazards. Assist with the management of food and beverage supplies and complete monthly and year-end inventory reports.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education – Minimum

  • High school diploma (or equivalent) and two or more years of demonstrated experience; or
  • Associate’s degree from an accredited institution and one or more years of demonstrated experience.

Experience – Minimum Demonstrated

  • Understanding of bowling, bowling equipment and facilities, and recreational activities;
  • Familiarity with fiscal management;
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, as necessary;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software and web-based communications (ie. Zoom, Skype, and/or Teams);
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and with a wide variety of projects and competing deadlines;
  • Customer-centric service;
  • Meet qualifications required by the Liquor Control Act and the Club and Drinking Establishment Act.

Experience – Preferred Demonstrated

  • Lead or assistant manager-level experience working in to bowling/billiards.
  • Bowling league and tournament organization/coordination experience.
  • Bowling equipment general maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Two or more years of accounting experience.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • ServSafe certified.

Skills and Abilities

In order to sell, serve or dispense any cereal malt beverage, the Assistant Manager/Bowling and Recreation must be at least 18 years of age or older, a citizen of the United States, and not have been convicted of or released from incarceration, probation or parole for, a felony or any other crime involving moral turpitude, drunkenness, DUI, or a violation of the liquor laws of Kansas, any other state, or the United States, as regulated by the Kansas Department of Revenue’s Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control (KSA 41-2701 et seq.). Ability to stand for extended periods of time and move throughout the recreation center. Full range of physical motion and physical agility (ie. bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, walk and reach overhead) to operate and perform maintenance on bowling equipment and manipulate same. Sight and ability to read printed material with or without vision aids. Verbal and written communication to present, convey and exchange information and ideas accurately and quickly. Physical agility to lift, carry, and/or pull up to 50 pounds. Hearing for average or normal conversations and to receive information. Ability to be exposed to noise extremes. The scope of the job requires evening and/or weekend activities. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the key functions of this position.
