- Align and fit parts according to specifications using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammers.
- Move parts into position using hoist or crane.
- Tack-weld fitted parts together.
- Study engineering drawings and blueprints to determine material requirements and task sequences.
- Design and construct templates and fixtures using hand tools.
- Hammer, chip and grind work pieces to cut, bend and straighten metal.
- Straighten warped or bent parts using sledges, hand torches or straightening presses.
- Heat work pieces to make them malleable, using hand torches or furnaces.
- Install boilers, containers and other structures.
- Remove high spots and cut bevels using hand files, portable grinders and cutting torches.
- Smooth work piece edges, and fix taps, tubes and valves.
Requirements
- 3 years of fitter work-related experience and/or training is required.
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- Training from a vocational school or previous employer in the use of application tools and in the application techniques, preferred.
- Must be able to pass a written and/or practical skills test.
- Must be able to read blueprints, section and plan drawings and weld symbols.
- Ability to multitask.
- Ability to work independently.
- Basic knowledge of mathematics.
- Experience working in a physically demanding environment.
- Familiarity with OSHA regulations and good safety practices.
- Able to carry up to 50lbs.
- Able to operate a wide range of tools, including but not limited to, arc welding equipment, oxy-fuel cutting equipment, angle grinder, die grinder, plasma table, overhead crane, jib crane, calipers and micrometers.
- Able to work at heights up to 15 feet on various types of platforms and lifts for various lengths of time.
- Able to enter and exit a confined space for various amounts of time.
