Job Description

School Overview
Justin-Siena is a Lasallian Catholic college preparatory school. We serve approximately 65students from the Napa Valley and neighboring Northern California communities, as well as
international students in residence from countries around the world. Dedicated, competent, and
caring faculty and staff are at the heart of Justin-Siena. Our mission emphasizes academic
excellence and a holistic student experience in the context of a loving community that prepares
students to serve and lead in an ever-changing world.

Position Summary
In tandem with the Director of College Counseling, the College Counselor is responsible for
advising Justin-Siena High School’s student body in regards to college decisions and
programing.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties
College Advising, including:

  • Manage a caseload of approximately 75 seniors and 75 juniors, meet individually with
juniors (beginning in the spring semester) and seniors at least twice each semester,
support students through the college application, financial aid, and scholarship
application process; document all contacts
  • Guide students in their college research and provide additional support by seeking out the
right college fit for each student
  • Plan and execute application workshops and presentations in large group and advisory
settings, including evenings and weekends
  • Support students to complete Justin-Siena’s College List & Request Form
  • Write letters of recommendation for college admissions and scholarships, prepare and

send Secondary School Reports to colleges, universities and scholarship sources, and
mid-year reports as necessary or as requested

  • Instruct teachers in the use of Scoir for writing and submitting teacher recommendations
and collaborate with counselors in the effective use of Scoir
  • Educate students and parents in the use of Scoir for making informed decisions about
their college options (comparing colleges and universities, exploring scholarship
opportunities, tracking college applications, and accessing a variety of other college
research materials)
  • Inform students about college entrance exams, interpret test results, create testing plans
with students and families, share resources available for test preparation as needed

Building Relationships, including:
Attend college admissions workshops, particularly those presented by UC, CSU, ACT,

the College Board, and stay up-to-date on the latest admission trends and policies
  • Build strong relationships with admissions officers through membership in and
attendance at WACAC & NACAC meetings to promote Justin-Siena and our students
  • Attend and participate in College Counseling (and Counseling when necessary) meetings
and workshops
  • Plan and attend college tours for sophomores, juniors and seniors
  • Attend counselor fly-in programs which require overnights and weekends
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications
Candidates are required to hold a Bachelor’s degree and possess a minimum of three to five
years of relevant experience in a college preparatory school or college/university. Candidates
should have a demonstrated understanding of the complex nature of the college counseling and
college application process, including knowledge of Microsoft Office products, Google
Applications for Education, Scoir, databases and social media.

  • Experience with college advising, admissions, and financial aid processes at the
secondary and/or collegiate level
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills; pleasant, warm demeanor
  • Must show a high level of initiative and follow through with the ability to work
independently
  • Strong organizational and project management
  • Detail-oriented, flexible, strong work ethic
  • Willing to participate in the co-curricular life of the school
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate in a diverse, inclusive work environment
  • Committed to ongoing education and professional growth

Preference will be given to those with experience in Lasallian or Catholic high schools. An
understanding of the developmental needs of adolescents is necessary; therefore, we seek a
healthy combination of positivity, flexibility, energy, creativity, and a sense of humor. We seek
candidates with demonstrated experience working in a diverse, inclusive community and strong
cross-cultural competency skills.
