JustCompassion is Hiring a Shelter Staff Near Tigard, or

Just Compassion of East Washington County is a Non-Profit community-centered response for addressing the needs of homeless individuals by building relationships and aspiring towards wholeness.
*We are looking for individuals with availability for morning/swing as well as flexibility to work at both of our locations (Tigard and Beaverton)
Job Title: Shelter Staff of Just Compassion of East Washington County 
Full-time: 40 hours/week
Position Reports To: Operations Manager
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Positions Reporting to the Position: None
Salary Range: Starting at $20/hr
Overview: The Shelter Staff carries out a variety of duties related to the operation of an emergency shelter, including accepting referrals based upon predetermined criteria, intake and orienting guests, providing support that meets the needs of guests entering the shelter including but not limited to the provision of food, clothing, and support toward the resolution of issues that have rendered them homeless. This position works with the public, other service agencies and professionals involved in the support of the guests.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Intake, Orientation, and Processing (20%)
  • Check in guests each day and secure/check bags.
  • Facilitate timely transitions for guests.
  • Distribute linens for the beds (sheet, pillow/pillowcase, blanket).
  • Input accurate notes in ShiftNote to ensure efficient communication with all staff.
Support Guest Needs (35%)
  • Prepare and cook meals and snacks.
  • Serve meals and snacks.
  • Facilitate guest showers, including sanitizing shower and bathroom between guests.
  • Distribute clothing or other necessities to guests as needed.
  • Wake guests at designated times.
  • Supervise guests and respond quickly and appropriately to any potential issues or conflicts that may arise.
  • Maintain positive, supportive and respectful guest relations. 
  • Support our focus on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. 
  • Facilitate timely transitions for guests.
Operational Support (20%)
  • Inventory and maintain supplies, including kitchen and cleaning supplies (bleach, gloves, masks, etc.).
  • Sanitize and wipe down tables, chairs, and surface areas of kitchen.
  • Collect, wash, dry, and fold laundry.
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary environment throughout the entire shelter, including cleaning bathrooms, mopping, sweeping and other cleaning tasks.
  • Attend and positively participate in required meetings.
  • Pursue ongoing development of skills and competencies.
  • Follow all organizational policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Follow through all directives and instructions.
Safety and Security (20%)
  • De-escalate conflict within the shelter.
  • Maintain security of the shelter and grounds by regular monitoring.
  • Call appropriate shelter leadership or law enforcement as required to maintain guest and staff safety.
  • Supervise guests and respond quickly and appropriately to any potential issues or conflicts that may arise
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities
  • High School Diploma
  • Prior shelter experience
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to walk up and down stairs.
  • Ability to safely prepare, cook, and serve meals (hot and cold).
  • Ability to get up and down off from the floor, unassisted.
  • Ability to stand for a combined total of more than 4 hours a day.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds, unassisted.
  • Ability to assist in physical set-up activities (e.g., setting up and rearranging folding tables and chairs, etc.).
  • Ability to perform activities while twisting and turning.
