Position Title: School Counselor, Middle School
FLSA Status: Exempt
Position Type: Full-time
Reports To: Head of Middle School
About June Shelton School
June Shelton School & Evaluation Center enjoys the distinction of being the world’s largest independent school for bright children with learning differences. Founded in 1976, Shelton is dedicated to making a difference by serving and empowering the lives of students who learn differently. While the school is clearly the centerpiece of its mission, Shelton is more than a school. It encompasses three other major components, all open to the community—a speech and language therapy program, an evaluation center, and a teacher-training program. Shelton is actively involvedwith research and collaborates with major medical institutions in the Dallas area, including Children’s Medical Center and UT Southwestern Medical Center. The Shelton School is a co-educational, non-sectarian school that serves approximately 900 students with learning differences in grades EC to 12. The Shelton School is accredited by Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS).

  • Purpose: The School Counselor regularly meets with students and directs and manages programs and procedures to aid students in academic, behavioral, social, and emotional development. Perform other duties as assigned by the division head.
Qualifications & Skills:
  • Master’s Degree in Counseling or mental health field required.
  • Clinical License – Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) preferred.
  • Must have student management and counseling experience, middle school counseling experience preferred.
  • Experience working with children with learning differences is preferred.
  • Must have basic computer skills and technology skills.
  • Must have a positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills.
Essential Functions:
  • Attendance and punctuality are essential to the successful performance of this job. Because of the daily interaction with students and colleagues, it is essential that the person in this position maintains good attendance.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Middle School on all student matters.
  • Liaison between school, family, and outside resources.
  • Assist with students in crisis.
  • Provide on-going staff support as needed.
  • Work with students to develop plans for success and to understand cause and effect relationships to behaviors and outcomes.
  • Coordinate social-emotional learning/advisory curriculum.
  • Assist administration with scheduling and parent conferences.
  • Collaborate with teachers to place students in appropriate classes.
  • Balance classes with the Middle School administration.
  • Perform any other duties requested by administration.
