Position Overview:  Heavy Equipment operators (Crane Operators) are responsible for a variety of material-moving equipment daily according to schedule and instructions, choosing and setting up the right crane or lift truck for the safe hoisting of equipment and material.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Inspect machines and equipment daily, perform routine maintenance procedures and minor repairs as required and initiate additional repair requests from mechanics when necessary to ensure equipment is in good working condition.
  • Determine load weights and check them against lifting capacities to prevent overload.
  • Inspect bundle packaging for conformance to regulations or customer requirements and remove and batch packaging tickets.
  • Direct helpers engaged in placing blocking or outrigging under cranes and truck drivers backing vehicles into loading bays.
  • Ensure cargo is properly secured prior to transporting.
  • Control cranes, lifts and other equipment using standard operating procedures to ensure effective transportation of materials and safety for all personnel on site.
  • Maintain visual and radio contact with ground operators according to best practices and site safety regulations and respond to questions and instructions clearly and quickly.
  • Maintain and update DOT driver log information daily.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • 2-4 years of Heavy Equipment/Crane Operations experience required
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • NCCCO Certification with TLL, TSS designations
  • OSHA-10 Certification (or be willing to obtain pre-employment)
  • Commercial Driver’s License – Class A 
  • DOT Certification (Medcard) (or obtain pre-employment)

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  • Skill necessary to maneuver large mobile equipment within moving traffic or limited access areas and to control operations of equipment.
  • Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.
  • The ability to coordinate two or more limbs (for example, two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while sitting, standing, or lying down. It does not involve performing the activities while the whole body is in motion.
  • The ability to judge which of several objects is closer or farther away from you, or to judge the distance between you and an object.
  • The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. 
  • The ability to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted.
  • The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 60% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under wide temperature variations and in hazardous conditions.
