Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for providing education and instruction in a safe, enjoyable and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement. Provides a quality experience to all members focused around the YMCA core values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following, other duties may be assigned:

  • Lead energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes as a means to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals. 
  • Emphasize safety and proper technique. Provide instruction on how to effectively utilize fitness equipment.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with members by providing personal attention through a proactive approach.
  • Maintain up-to-date working knowledge of wellness and fitness trends in order to provide effective support to members.
  • Maintain a safe and clean exercise environment.
  • Serve as a positive role model to members.
  • Maintain accurate, complete and timely records including but not limited to class attendance and accident/incident reports.
  • Attend all required trainings and mandatory staff meetings.

Child Protection Responsibilities:

  • Adheres to policies related to boundaries with youth.
  • Participates in required abuse risk management training.
  • Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
  • Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
  • Adheres to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • National certification in group fitness instruction (i.e. – ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification; CPR, First Aid and AED certifications.
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years experience teaching group wellness classes preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of exercise physiology, kinesiology and/or anatomy.
  • Full understanding of exercise equipment and proper operations.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal, written and interpersonal) to instruct/teach as well as provide positive feedback, motivation and encouragement.
  • Previous demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.
