Full Time, 36 hours per week

Job Overview:

The Optician will assist individuals in selecting and fitting eyeglasses and contact lenses based on prescriptions provided by Optometrists. They will work closely with patients to understand their visual needs, lifestyle, and preferences, helping them choose appropriate eyewear to correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The Optician must be knowledgeable about various lens materials, coatings, frame styles, optometry terminology, and insurance benefits. They must also be well educated in reading prescription lenses, adjusting, and repairing frames, filing insurance benefits, and collecting payments. The Optician will also provide guidance on options that suit the patient's prescription, face shape, fashion preferences and budget.

Duties:

  • Measure clients’ bridge and eye size, temple length, vertex distance, pupillary distance and optical centers of eyes using measuring devices.
  • Assist clients in selecting frames that coordinate with facial and eye measurements and optical prescriptions.
  • Recommend eyeglass frames, lenses and lens coatings related to their optical needs.
  • Understand insurance benefits and relay information on to the patient.
  • Collect payment from patient and file insurance benefits.
  • Obtain customers previous records to assist in re-making glasses or lenses
  • Prepare work orders and instructions for labs on grinding lenses and fabricating eyeglasses.
  • Reshape frame to fit customer properly and comfortably.
  • Fix, adjust and refit broken frames.
  • Educate clients about adapting to, wearing, and caring for their eyeglasses.
  • Educate clients on inserting, removing, and caring for contact lenses
  • Perform administrative duties such as tracking inventory and sales and submitting patient insurance information.
  • Comfortable working out of and potentially operating the Optometry Mobile Unit.

Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required, must obtain within first 90 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • American Board of Opticianry (ABO) certification.
  • 5 years experience in an optometry setting.
  • 2 years experience as an Optician.
