ABOUT JOLT

Jolt is a non-profit organization founded in 2016 to increase the civic participation of Latinos in Texas to build a stronger democracy and ensure that everyone’s voice is heard. Jolt knows that our democracy works best when everyone gets a seat at the table. That’s why Jolt builds the leadership capacity of Latinos to mobilize their peers to action. Jolt lifts up the voices of young Latinos in Texas to tell their own stories through creative arts and acts, development institutes, and student leadership. 

Jolt believes that Texas is poised for change, with a growing and disaffected Latino population. Today, 1 in 3 eligible voters in Texas is Latino and projections indicate that by 2030, Latinos will make up the majority of the state’s population. But demographics alone aren’t destiny. Winning change requires building a homegrown movement and a smart, focused, long-term strategy that can deliver equality and power to those who are most excluded and often first impacted.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Jolt believes that registering to vote is the first step in engaging with our democracy. The Voter Registration Canvasser will work with their regional team to meet a collective of 30,000 registered voters in 2024. To meet this goal, the organization is hiring a team of seasonal, full-time Voter Registration Canvasser to assist in registering new voters in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Jolt seeks dynamic, outgoing, and hard-working individuals ready to create change in Texas during a 30 week project and requires an expedited ramp to make this project successful. Jolt’s Voter Registration Canvassers engage individuals on the importance of civic education and continued engagement to create change in Texas.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: 

• Conduct voter registration including but not limited to high traffic areas, high school and college campuses, community events in assigned areas or identified by team lead or Regional Manager
• Motivate voters to pledge to vote and inform voters on upcoming elections
• Collaborate with community partners and leaders to coordinate times and events to register voters
• Enter and track data in EveryAction (or similar software) and/or spreadsheet on a daily basis
• Schedule and attend weekly check-ins with the Regional Manager and provide feedback, discuss voter registration and pledge card collection, and request support as needed
• Drop off pledge cards daily for quality control review located at the local Jolt office and discuss feedback
• Communicate daily with your supervisor about your shifts and availability
• Represent the organization effectively to the public
• Travel to locations to conduct field work including voter registration card submission to local elections office within Harris County
• Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience in registering voters in Texas and/or knowledge of voter registration in Texas preferred
• Highly motivated and ability to engage with diverse community and community leaders
• Strong interpersonal skills, deadline driven, and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
• Ability to work irregular hours and on weekends 
• Eligible to become a Volunteer Deputy Registrar in the state of Texas, the ideal candidate is already deputized
• Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred 
• Access to a smartphone and laptop or iPad (or similar)
• Must be able to work 40 hours per week

LOCATION AND LENGTH OF EMPLOYMENT

Three positions available in Dallas, Texas. The Voter Registration Canvasser reports to the Regional Manager in Dallas.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. Please note this is a full time, temporary position working 40 hours per week. This temporary assignment begins on March 11, 2024 and will run through at least October 15, 2024. Mandatory orientation will be the week of March 11, 2024 in Houston, TX.COMPENSATION/BENEFITS
