JOIN PDX is Hiring a Director of People & Culture Near Portland, OR

JOIN (joinpdx.org) is a non-profit organization that exists to support the efforts of individuals and families experiencing homelessness to transition off the streets and into permanent housing. We are inspired by the vision of a community where everyone has a place to call home. We’re looking for a Director of People & Culture that can help lead our people strategy in alignment with our strategic direction, oversee and carry out day-to-day human resources needs, and help lead the establishment of a successful people & culture team, all while maintaining a big-picture view of organizational vision, direction, and strategy.

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Executive Director, this position will have the primary responsibility for continuing to develop and maintain innovative, cutting-edge human resources strategies related to hiring, training, accountability, compensation and benefits, employee relations, workplace safety, and legal compliance in pursuit of aligning staffing and culture with JOIN’s values and strategic direction. JOIN is committed to pursuing effective strategies and devoting dedicated time and resources at every level of the organization to address disparities based on identity and to apply an equity lens to all decisions, programs, and policies in furthering JOIN’s commitment to becoming an anti-racist organization. With this in mind, ideal candidates will have a solid base of human resources knowledge to draw from that will support their ability to be at the forefront of co-creating a healthy work culture centered on building and sustaining a diverse workforce, collaborative leadership models, authentic mutual accountability, equity, inclusion, and intentional belonging.

You will find yourself a great fit for this position if you have:

  • Experience as a Senior HR Manager or higher position in a workplace with more than 50 employees; Nonprofit experience is strongly preferred
  • A 4-year degree with a Human Resources and/or organizational psychology specialty or any combination of work experience with leadership responsibilities and HR coursework or certification
  • Excellent written, interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Experience working successfully in small teams, with cross-departmental support, and are prepared to grow a department through strategic visioning 
  • Experience working in a collaborative leadership environment that prioritizes transparency and occasional consensus-based decision-making
  • Excellent project management skills; seeing a project through from start to finish
  • Experience centering racial equity in their work and a commitment to JOIN’s goal of becoming an anti-racist organization
  • A track record of leading innovative programs and policies in HR practices, especially as it relates to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging
  • A curious mind and the knack to think creatively and try out-of-the-box approaches to people management and culture development 
  • The ability to juggle multiple projects, multi-task, meet deadlines, and maintain a sense of humor
  • The ability to be a self-starter and independent problem-solver
  • Be equally comfortable working independently and as a member of a team
  • A mission-oriented perspective that guides your decision-making

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and execute the development of HR departmental goals, objectives, budgets, and systems
  • Foster a culture of employee appreciation and accountability at an organizational level
  • Co-create recruitment and employee termination strategies with management to achieve JOIN’s strategic and programmatic goals; coordinate hiring processes by posting open positions, conducting reference checks, supporting/coordinating interview processes, completing new employee packets, and maintaining personnel files; managing employee exits including interviews and other procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with the finance and development team to develop and monitor departmental and project budgets that include human resources services, employee recognition, company outings, individual training budgets, workplace community events, and benefits administration
  • Continually study and evaluate HR Oregon and Federal employment laws and policies, programs, and practices to keep management informed of new developments; keep corresponding company communications and standard operating procedures up to date
  • Select and supervise Human resource consultants, attorneys, and training specialists and coordinate insurance brokers, carriers, and administrators according to funding availability
  • Implement and execute the onboarding processes, including coordinating periodic check-ins to follow up with new employees in partnership with program managers
  • Manage employee benefits enrollment and access
  • Work collaboratively with the Equity and Inclusion Director to conduct all HR operations from a equity and anti-racist lens
  • Formulate and recommend HR policies and objectives for JOIN on any topic associated with employee relations and employee rights; lead integration into JOIN’s daily operations
  • Partner with management to communicate HR policies, procedures, programs, and laws.
  • Coach and train managers in their communication, feedback, recognition, and interaction responsibilities with staff who report to them.
  • Conduct periodic staff satisfaction surveys. Identify strengths and challenges to ensure staff are receiving the support and professional development needed to be successful in their position
  • Manage and implement a training/professional development calendar and track by employee
  • Coordinate and execute record(s) validations and verifications
  • Support the finance team with payroll and benefits administration to ensure accuracy
  • Serve as lead and point of contact for maintaining HR records, systems, software, and processes (HRIS, benefits, training, and performance management platforms)
  • Occasionally assist JOIN’s development team with event preparation and grantseeking for departmental growth 
  • Other duties as assigned

Compensation & Benefits:

Salary: $80,000 - $110,000 DOE, Salaried-Exempt
