Job Description

The CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS TESTING (CMT) LABORATORY MANAGER reports to the department head, senior geotechnical engineer, or project manager, providing essential support for project success and client satisfaction. CMT Lab Manager handles both field and office tasks on multiple projects, requiring advanced technical knowledge and experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist with the management and supervision of EMC’s certified testing laboratory.
  • Manage the reception and testing of samples/materials, as well as day-to-day in-lab operations.
  • Laboratory Testing of soils, aggregates (gravel), concrete, and asphalt in strict accordance the American Standard Testing Materials (ASTM) standards, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Test Methods, and United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Test Methods.
  • Oversee and ensure the proper execution of procedures and equipment calibration essential for the operation of a laboratory verified by the USACE Materials Testing Center (MTC) and compliant with AASHTO proficiency testing requirements.
  • Manage inventory and procurement of testing materials and supplies.
  • Ensure a safe and clean working environment in the lab.
  • Provide guidance and support to technicians, ensuring consistent and high-quality testing procedures.
  • Develop and implement quality control procedures and protocols for materials testing.
  • Review test data and reports to ensure accuracy and compliance with industry standards.
  • Collaborate with project managers and engineers to address quality-related issues and recommend solutions.
  • Maintain accurate records of all tests conducted, including test results and associated documentation.
  • Preparation and distribution of laboratory testing reports, and liaison with EMC's geotechnical and materials staff, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the education, training, and development of new testing methods while assisting in resolving client issues.
  • Assist with management in training new employees on ASTM & AASHTO test methods.
Job Requirements

EDUCATION AND/OR WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma/GED required
  • A minimum of 5 years of combined experience in laboratory geotechnical and construction materials testing, which includes at least 2 years of field experience and a minimum of 3 years of laboratory experience. 
  • Required Certifications: ACI Concrete Strength Certificate, ACI Certified Aggregate Base Certificate, ACI Certified Aggregate Testing Certificate, ACI Concrete Field-Testing Technician, Nuclear Density Gauge Operator Certificate.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geology, Natural Sciences, Construction related field, or other appropriate technical fields are highly preferred. 
  • Familiarity with ASTM and AASHTO test methods specific to geotechnical and construction materials
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel), geotechnical and material testing equipment, and calibration procedures required.
  • Demonstrated positive leadership with a good understanding of business metrics, safety policies/procedures.
  • Valid Driver’s License - Must be insurable by fleet insurer; driving history will be reviewed by agent and underwriter.
  • Strong written, verbal communication, and people management skills
  • Experience in writing technical reports, business development, and client relations.
  • Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service. 
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to perform essential job functions safely and successfully in accordance with OSHA guidelines and directives, meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance in line with corporate policy.
  • Exposure to outside weather conditions such as wet and/or humid environments, extreme cold and/or heat, dusty and noisy work environments may occur.
  • Must be able to perform tasks that require long-term standing and/or repetitive motions.
  • Overtime, travel, and moderate physical work may be required to meet workload demands. The job schedule may include some nights and weekends as needed.
  • Must be able to regularly lift, move, or handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to speak clearly on the telephone.
