Red Clay School District Position: Head of School/Commandant Location: Delaware Military Academy Reports to: Delaware Military Academy’s Board of Directors Supervises: Administrative team, Dean of Cadets, Dean of Instruction
Delaware Military Academy is looking for a dynamic and transformational leader (Commandant/Head of School) for the 2023-2024 school year (1 year term). This leader will act as the school’s principal and chief administrative officer and will report directly to the Board of Directors. The Commandant is accountable for all aspects of school operations; manages matter directly or through direct-report administrators. The Commandant will also participate as a non-voting ex-officio member of the Board.
The school Commandant will work collaboratively to direct and nurture all members of the school staff and to communicate effectively with parents and staff. Inherent in the position are the responsibilities for scheduling, curriculum development, extracurricular activities, personnel management, emergency procedures and facility operations.
MIMIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Hold a valid Delaware School Principal/Assistant Principal Certification or eligible for the certification 5 years administrator experience required 5 years Head of School/Principal experience preferred Demonstrated experience as a transformational leader Demonstrated instructional leadership Record of improvement of student achievement
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED: Successful experience with school improvement and leadership Proven track record for improving student achievement Experience with project management Strong instructional leadership background

PRIMARY FUNCTION AND PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
A transformational leader that is responsible for the operation of the instructional program and providing educational leadership for the staff, students and community.
Establish and promote high standards and expectations for all students and staff for academic performance and responsibility for behavior.
Organize, direct and evaluate the instructional program, both curricular and extracurricular, and implement new curricula consistent with the school’s philosophy, mission statement and instructional goals.
Supervise in a fair and consistent manner effective discipline and attendance systems with high standards, consistent with the philosophy, values, and mission of the school. Ensure a safe, orderly environment that encourages students to take responsibility for behavior and creates high morale among staff and students. File all required reports regarding violence, vandalism, attendance and discipline matters.
Serve as a role model, establish a professional rapport and display the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards for students and staff, demonstrating the importance and relevance of learning, accepting responsibility, and demonstrating pride in the education profession. Encourage all teachers to do the same.
Notify the Board, appropriate personnel and agencies immediately when there is evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical or social conditions, potential suicide or students appearing to be under the influence of alcohol or controlled substance. Assume responsibility of the health safety, and welfare of the students, employees and visitors.
Keep the staff informed and seek ideas for the improvement of the school. Conduct meetings, as necessary, for the proper functioning of the school.
Establish procedures that create and maintain attractive organized, functional, healthy, clean and safe facilities, with proper attention to visual, acoustic, and temperature. Develop clearly understood procedures and provide regular drills for emergencies and disasters.
Establish and maintain a master schedule for all teachers and schedules and procedures for the supervision of students in non-classroom areas, including before and after school.
Communicate regularly and maintain visibility with parents, students, teachers and the Board, creating a cooperative relationship to support the students in the school.
Use effective presentation, written and oral communications when addressing students, staff and parents.
Communicate with the Board regularly, including attending monthly meetings regarding the needs, success and general operations of the school.
Establish and enforce policies and procedures for maintaining confidentiality, storing confidential information, monetary funds, student records, employee records, etc.
Enforce the policies and procedures of the Academy, particularly the uniform and appearance policy to assure a school environment that is focused of academic achievement rather than on individuals.
Direct the development, knowledge management, implementation and evaluation of all aspects of the Academy.
Observe, evaluate complete and use formal observations to provide meaningful feedback regarding teacher’s performance.
Promote high standards and expectation for all students and staff for developing and maintaining the school’s philosophy, mission statement and instructional goals.
