Description

The Johnston County Public Utilities Department is looking for an Electrical Maintenance Technician to fill an entry level position.

Duties and Responsibilities

-This is an entry level position. An employee in this class is responsible for
performing a wide variety of skilled work in the maintenance and repair of water, wastewater, and electrical equipment and facilities.
-Work involves the responsibility of performing tasks to maintain efficient operations of the public utilities systems. Work assignments may arise as a result of equipment breakdowns, inspections, or preventative maintenance procedures.
-Assists and performs basic maintenance and troubleshoots a variety of electrical equipment related to pumping systems, chemical systems, electrical systems including Motor Control Centers, motors, manual and automatic generator systems, radio equipment, panel-boards and remote control equipment such as PLC's, as well as SCADA systems;
-Assists in the removal, repair and overhauls of pumps, motors, variable speed drives, reduced voltage soft starters, mechanical bar-screens, chemical feed systems, gas compressors, valves, blowers, radio communication systems and other types of equipment related to water or wastewater treatment plants and pumping facilities.
-Responsible for working with CMMS / Work Order system and maintaining proper logs of work performed and safety equipment used.
-Operates various trucks and other equipment to complete preventative maintenance and repairs, including forklifts.
-Utilizes a variety of mechanical, electrical, and machinist's tools to fabricate, rebuild, strengthen, and maintain various parts and pieces of plant and pumping station equipment.
-Orders supplies and materials as required for completion of various work
assignments; prepares and maintains related documents and records.
-Interprets performance data, evaluates testing data and performance, and maintains performance data records and preventive maintenance schedules.
-Maintains the working environment in a clean and orderly condition.
-Performs routine housekeeping and conducts regular site safety inspections.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

This is an entry level position and the ability to work well with others and listen to instruction carefully is critical in keeping a safe work environment.
Working knowledge of techniques, tools and materials used in the maintenance and repair of industrial machinery and equipment including large capacity pumps, motors, valves, gear boxes, compressors, boilers, generators, etc. Working knowledge of safety rules, codes, and regulations pertaining to the work. Working knowledge of the methods and precautions in storing and handling chlorine and other hazardous chemicals. Ability to maintain, adjust, and repair industrial machinery and equipment. Ability to follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively. Performs call back work and standby duty on a rotating and emergency basis as required; works flexible hours, including holidays, evenings, weekends and split shifts.
Desired Education and Experience

High school diploma or its equivalent
-Possession or the ability to earn a Maintenance Technologist certification within 18 months of hire.
-Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
-Ability to work at height is a plus.
-CPR/First Aid Certification within 1st year (Provided Training)
-Preferred candidate will have good communication skills, work well with a team, comfortable working with computers, can apply knowledge learned and is motivated to constantly learn.
Physical Requirements- Works at or near energized electrical circuits. May work at heights greater than 10ft. Works in proximity of radio equipment. Must learn and follow proper safety techniques and procedures for all aspects of work. Must be able to perform the basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must possess visual acuity necessary to inspect schematic drawings, prepare and analyze figures and data, perform extensive reading, and operate a computer terminal. The nature of the work may also require the incumbent to use power tools and noise producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles and heavy equipment and enter confined spaces.
