Purpose

To perform skilled maintenance and operation of instrumentation, water treatment, and electronic and pneumatic systems in an electrical generation and campus facility environment.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for providing journey-level craftsmanship in the calibration, installation, maintenance, and repair of instrumentation and control systems.

  • Upgrades controls or recommends modifications to existing controls. Confers with users in order to gain an understanding of their needs and provides technical advice. Attend staff meetings, safety training or meetings, and plant operation and maintenance training courses

  • Acts as a lead troubleshooter for all crafts involved with the power plant, chilling stations, or building metering equipment. Researches new technical data for new products.

  • Performs journey-level work in the designing, installation, maintenance, and operation of all pneumatic and digital instrumentation and control systems. Coordinates commissioning of control systems on new or renovation projects. Accuracy is required in all phases of work. Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Monitors, recommends modifications, repairs, and installs all components for both pneumatic, PLC, SCADA, and DDC systems. Assists maintenance engineers with technical issues. Informs appropriate personnel of unusual conditions, problems, or deficiencies as related to equipment and corrects as necessary. Completes work orders as required using automated systems.

  • Uses hand tools and electrical test equipment to troubleshoot control systems and associated mechanical and electrical systems. Performs work from written or oral instructions, specifications, blueprints, or wiring diagrams. Cleans and maintains all equipment and work areas. Identifies, reports, and corrects safety hazards. Updates procedures and checklists as required. Required to carry UT cell phone during work and on-call hours.

  • Uses troubleshooting and diagnostic techniques to identify equipment problems. Performs routine and preventative maintenance on control systems. Lifts up to 50 pounds. May perform elevated work, including utilizing scaffolding and personnel lifts. May work in confined spaces. May operate cranes, forklifts, and personnel lifts. Drive UT vehicle. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4. May be required to report to work at Pickle Research Campus.

  • Follow all University and UEM safety policies and procedures, take required safety training, and identify and report safety hazards. Perform work tasks in a safe manner, wear the proper personal protective equipment, and report near misses and incidents

  • Abide by Utilities and Energy Management's set of core values: Safety, Respect, Integrity, Reliability, Teamwork, and Excellence. Work effectively from a remote office or on campus.

  • Performs other related functions as assigned. May attend staff meetings. Attends safety training or meetings. Attends plant operation and maintenance training courses. May train new personnel as required. Complete UEM Supervisor training in 18 months. Required to carry University cell phone.

Required Qualifications

High school graduation or GED. Five years of experience in the operation and maintenance of instrumentation and control equipment in support of a University Utilities Plant or similar industrial environment as described in the essential functions.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Over 10 years of experience in the operation and maintenance of instrumentation and control equipment in support of a University Utilities Plant or similar industrial environment as described in the essential functions. Associate degree in a technical field. Graduation from an accredited college level program in Industrial Instrumentation or related studies. Certification as an Instrument Technician, Control System Technician, or related field. Demonstrate excellent interpersonal communication skills.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).
