Position Summary:

The Respiratory Care Clinical Lead provides patient centered, specialized, evidence-based respiratory care across the continuum through an interprofessional approach to treatment, research, education and advocacy. Contributes to the goals of the department by being accountable for the delivery of compassionate and safe care within the scope of practice as defined by the Maryland Board of Physicians and JHCC policy. Through collaborative practice with all members of the care team, the Clinical Lead is responsible for patient outcomes which meet the highest quality and level of care expected at the JHCC. The professional practice of Respiratory Care at the JHCC promotes and supports a culture of teamwork, compassion, and innovation along with a commitment to academic growth and professional development.

• Utilizes evidence-based practice and unit specific competencies to assess the physical condition and respiratory needs of the patient to develop a plan of care in a collaborative practice with the interprofessional team.

• Monitors compliance with standards of care by observation, verbal reports, audits, and written documentation, provides feedback to staff, educators, managers, and director.

• Participates / coordinates team to allow for active participation in multidisciplinary rounds to promote continuity of care and improved outcomes.

• Along with the bedside RCP, assists with the plan of care for patients in collaboration with the interprofessional team to provide the highest quality of care and clinical outcomes.

• Demonstrates clinical expertise in provision of all respiratory care modalities that are age appropriate and culturally specific to maintain balance within the unit.

• Provides consultation and maintains positive relationships with physicians, nursing, and other inter-professional team members, collaborating to problem solve and support patient care to improve clinical outcomes.

• Functions as the clinical and technical resource in all respiratory care modalities and with all equipment across the spectrum of respiratory care.

• Collaborates with the scheduling committee to support staffing needs, monitors staffing levels each shift and provides input to the Clinical Coordinators, Manager/s and Director in budget preparation/monitoring and in the identification of workload variability to predict and plan for appropriate staffing to enhance productivity/efficiency while maintaining quality care.

• Identifies ways to improve the patient's experience, streamline care processes and lower costs while improving patient, family, and staff satisfaction.

• As an empathetic leader, maintains a work environment that is positive, and highly supportive of a professional role to retain expert respiratory therapists.

• Demonstrates the ability to reduce as well as manage risks to reduce and or prevent crises.

• Performs skillfully in life threatening emergencies including matching demands and resources during crises situations.

Education:

AA degree required; BS degree preferred

Licensure/Certification:

• Registered Respiratory Therapist credential by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) required.

• Current Maryland Respiratory Care Practitioner Licensure

• Graduate of a Registered Respiratory Therapy Program approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC)

• Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification from the American Heart Association

• NBRC Neonatal and Pediatric Specialty (NPS) preferred, or obtain within 1 year of hire.

• Obtain PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support), NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) and STABLE certification within 1 year of hire.

Required Work Experience:

2 years of neonatal/pediatric critical intensive care experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Functions as the clinical and technical resource and lead:

• Demonstrates effective leadership skills with the ability to develop, mentor and align a diverse team of respiratory care practitioners and ECMO specialists.

• Ability to collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to represent respiratory care in positive manner.

• Supports and develops a positive team culture.

• Must possess advanced knowledge of cardiopulmonary pathophysiology and its relation to the practice of respiratory care.

• Must demonstrate competency in the application of theoretical principles to the initiation, maintenance, and discontinuation of all respiratory care modalities across and related equipment as gained in a COARC (Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care) approved respiratory care program, with advanced knowledge and experience in neonatal, pediatric, and ECMO services.

• Requires the aptitude to be trained and the fundamental knowledge to apply all equipment and therapeutic modalities used in respiratory care and ECMO.

• Must be competent in the ability to analyze and interpret physician orders, perform therapy, and communicate outcomes of treatment to the health care team members.

• Applies respiratory care modalities to pediatric and neonatal patients consistent with JHCC practice along with hospital-approved techniques of infection control.

• Demonstrates organizational skills that allow the individual to map out and provide clinical care within their area of responsibility.

• Effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills to establish working relationships that foster quality patient care.

• Ability to apply principles of evidence-based practice and service excellence in practice. In age specific populations, they must be familiar with patient populations to which they are assigned.
