Sibley Memorial Hospital - Johns Hopkins Medicine, is a non-profit, full service 318 bed acute care community hospital located in the Palisades neighborhood of Washington, DC.

About this position:

The Professional Development Specialist provides professional development and education to assist staff in preparing for contemporary practice and support in acquiring the evidence-based knowledge and skills needed to competently care for med/surg, intermediate care, telemetry and musculoskeletal patients. She/he facilitates bridging the gap between research and evidence-based practice ensuring quality and safe patient care both directly and indirectly. She/he participates in the assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating activities associated with comprehensive unit-based and hospital-wide nursing educational needs.

  1. Utilizes resource nurses and collaborates with the Total Joint and Spine nurse navigators to assist with planning of educational activities on the orthopedic unit. Provides the resource nurses with current information regarding educational activities to be distributed to staff.
  1. Provides education activities to all ancillary personnel caring for intermediate care, telemetry and musculoskeletal patients including but not limited to Nursing Assistants, Clinical Technician, Licensed Practical Nurse, Monitor Technicians, Administrative Service Representative, and Transporters. These educational activities are presented on a regular basis and assist with maintaining clinical skills, developing communication skills and enhancing teamwork.
  1. Provides clinical consultation to nurses, physicians, and other interdisciplinary colleagues regarding patients, systems, processes, specialty technology, and equipment.
  1. Leads Quality Improvement projects including data collection, interpretation of data, and is able to facilitate change at the point-of-care.

Minimum Education and Experience Required:

  1. Licensure as a Registered Nurse (R.N.) in the District of Columbia which includes a certification and a separate CNS license.
  2. Master’s degree in nursing or related discipline preferred or must be matriculated into a master’s program within 9 months of employment.
  3. Board-Certification within specialty preferred or acquired within 9 months of employment.
  4. Minimum of 5 years of RN experience on surgical, telemetry, and/or step down/IMC units.
  5. Current CPR Certification required.
