We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onwards toward certifying the Joby aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration, scaling our manufacturing, and preparing to launch commercial service in 2025.OverviewJoby is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer to join our Electric Powertrain team in San Carlos, CA. This role will work primarily on the New Production Introduction (NPI) - developing, analyzing, testing, refining and launching production of one of the world's most sophisticated and power dense Electric Propulsion System (EPU). The candidate will participate in the product development from concept phase through validation, production and beyond. ResponsibilitiesDesign, development and technical management of engineering components, of both simple and complex, within the Electric Propulsion Unit’s Stator and Rotor and it’s interfaces with the rest of the aircraftLeadership and stewardship of these components through validation testing, FAA certification and beyond.Exemplify technical excellence and set the standard for work. Lead by exampleHold design reviews and be able to demonstrate decisions based on sound engineering.Ownership and maintenance the BOM and 3D CATIA assembly database for the Electric Propulsion UnitChange management of parts, assemblies and documentationRequiredBS or MS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering discipline8 years of working experience in Aerospace, Electric Vehicle Powertrain or an industry with rigorous and sophisticated engineering/manufacturing standardsProfessional experience on the design, development and manufacturing of electric machines (motors)Superior critical and analytical thinking and problem-solving skillsSubject matter expertise in multiple areas of Mechanical Engineering including Design, Materials, Manufacturing Processes, Structural and Thermal analyses, High Voltage Electrical Systems and Reliability EngineeringDemonstrated drive to deliver on ambitious schedules, even and especially if unconventional & creative solutions are necessary to do soDeep expertise utilizing analytic tools to solve complex issues and failure analysis, both at the assembly and part levelWorking knowledge of FEA principlesProficiency in tolerance analysis, metrology, and common inspection equipment and methodologyStrong knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing and ASME drawing standardsProficiency in Familiar with BOM structuring, Engineering Change Process Management in ENOVIAHighly proactive attitude with the ability to manage multiple assignmentsStrong written and verbal communication skillsA demonstrated record of working hard, being a trustworthy teammate in a fast-paced dynamic environment, holding yourself and others to high standards, and being kind to others. DesiredHands-on experience working within aircraft certification programExcellent understanding of FAR Part 23 and 27 regulationsHands-on experience in designing and carrying out related tests for both model correlation and design validationHands-on experience in material tests for generating material model inputExperience in Design for 5-axis CNC manufacturingExperience in vibrational and fatigue analysisExperience in FE application in reliability (stress-strength, structural life prediction, etc.)Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $123,400-$201,500/year.
