The Astrophysics and Space Institute aims to rapidly expand our knowledge of the universe through the creation of innovative hardware and software platforms. This includes the development of computational tools and frameworks, ground and space-based instrumentation, and the promotion of fresh approaches to technological advancement that develop resources at a fraction of the typical time and cost.

The Role 

Reporting to the Program Scientist, the Science Associate will play a crucial role in managing and enhancing our astrophysics portfolio to maximize its impact on the global scientific community.

The Science Associate’s role will include:

  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Assessing the impact of existing scientific programs, grants, and investments, and documenting their outcomes to inform future decision-making.
  • Evidence-Driven Decision-Making: Utilizing evidence and analysis to make informed decisions regarding scientific projects and inquiries, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Exploring New Opportunities: Identifying and evaluating new areas of involvement in astrophysics, such as technology development, talent cultivation, and strategies for accelerating scientific discovery.
  • Resource Management: Developing and implementing strategies for providing and managing astronomical resources for the community, including data, software, observing platforms, and computing capabilities.
Program Management and Gift/Grant Support Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate and maintain communication with grantee PIs and research teams to track progress and challenges faced over the duration of the award
  • Periodically assess if additional or different kinds of support could be necessary or beneficial 
  • Participate in the internal assessment process, including the analysis of incoming scientific proposals and reports in context of the current landscape
  • Assess the effectiveness and impact of current astrophysics programs, grants, and gifts, utilizing metrics and analysis to measure success and inform strategic decision-making.
  • Contribute to optimization of budgets and financial resources associated with astrophysics programs, monitoring expenditures and forecasting future needs to ensure efficient use of resources.
Strategic Program Development and Collaboration Responsibilities:
  • Work with team members to develop new programs that might support technology, talent, or specific future pathways for the field
  • Design and organize effective convenings around strategic program goals, including community building and accelerating science outcomes
  • Act as a conduit for bringing in innovative ideas and perspectives from the astrophysics community, actively engaging with stakeholders to identify emerging trends and opportunities for collaboration.
  • Help resource academic and industry partners for future endeavors in astronomy at different scales
Scientific Analysis and Information Management Responsibilities:
  • Perform simulations and calculations to inform scientific trades for project directions
  • Contribute to science cases and requirements flowdown for particular projects that overlap with individual expertise 
  • Design and implement document management systems for overseeing large projects
  • Coordinate global science teams, set agendas and directions for collaboration, and lead meetings
  • Manage interfaces between our astrophysics resources (data, software, hardware) and the scientific user community including conference presentations, trainings, workshops, and data competitions 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - We are interested in people with any of the following subspecialties (instrumentation, data science, and general astrophysics) and expect to grow our team with varied expertise. Some of the desired capabilities include:
  • Proven expertise in one or multiple subfields of astrophysical research, such as observational cosmology, stellar astrophysics, exoplanets, time domain astronomy, planetary science, or high-energy astrophysics.
  • Familiarity with observational techniques and instruments used in ground- and space-based astrophysical observations.
  • Proficiency in computational tools, software, and data analysis techniques commonly used in astrophysical research (e.g., Python, MATLAB, IDL, Zemax, Github)
  • Familiarity with advanced statistical and data analysis methodologies including machine learning, hierarchical Bayesian analysis, and high performance computing
  • Background in astronomical instrumentation, including experience with the design, development, precision calibration and/or operation of telescopes, detectors, spectrographs, or other instruments across different wavelength ranges.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
Requirements - Applicants must:
  • Have a Ph.D. degree or equivalent from an accredited university in Astronomy & Astrophysics or a closely related field, preferably with 2 years of postdoctoral experience in scientific research, analysis, or program management
  • Demonstrated experience in leading or contributing to astrophysical research projects, with a track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Have a values-based, collaborative working style with demonstrated commitment to the highest standards of ethics and confidentiality
  • Be based at the Schmidt Sciences offices in New York or Virginia and be able to travel within the U.S. and internationally on a regular basis as needed following company policy and permitting circumstances.

$120,000 - $160,000 a year
At Schmidt Sciences we are committed to fair, transparent pay and we strive to provide competitive, market-informed compensation. The target salary range for this position is $120,000 to $160,000. Compensation for the successful candidate will be informed by the candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, competencies and experience.
