What your job will be like :

The group leader for the DC Power group provides management and electrical engineering technical oversight for a team of engineers and technicians supporting accelerator operations, and other lab initiatives.

The role will also work with customers to develop planning, cost, and schedules to maintain reliable DC Power systems to support accelerator operations, address obsolescence issues, and lead state-of-the-art DC Power system development.

The incumbent will utilize engineering resources to balance incoming work requests, assist in the prioritization of tasks, help to mitigate resource conflicts, and monitor customer satisfaction of engineering services.

In this role you will :

  • Carry out day-to-day operations of the DC Power group. Develop strategies to increase productivity and increase motivation through thoughtful work assignments within DC Power.
  • Maintain an understanding of the accelerator operations requirements for machine operations. Ensure group resources are assigned sufficiently to meet the goals of the program.
  • Manage the group annual work plan and budget. Ensure resources are properly assigned to maintain machine operations within budget.
  • Lead the development of new DC current sources that : resolves obsolescence issues with existing equipment and provides new or enhanced DC power capabilities to accelerator physicists.
  • Guide engineers in the development and troubleshooting of hardware and software used to support machine operations.
  • Evaluate and develop strategies to address yearly DC Power system problems, repairs, maintenance, and other issues related to system performance.
  • Stay abreast of accelerator DC power conversion and sources at other labs through personal relationships, workshops, and conferences.
  • Encourage engineering staff to share and collaborate our DC Power engineering expertise on relevant projects.
  • Work with accelerator engineering systems management to develop strategies that address DC Power performance improvement and obsolescence needs for the CEBAF accelerator, experimental halls, and other lab initiatives.
  • Ensure projects are developed with relevant stakeholder involvement, reviewed at appropriate stages, and documented upon completion.

Ensure equipment turn over meets the needs of our customers during acceptance testing. Maintain DC Power equipment over its lifecycle.

Analyze accelerator downtime weekly and work with accelerator operability to increase machine availability / reliability.

Investigate reports of defective, damaged, or malfunctioning parts, assemblies, equipment, or systems to determine the nature and scope of the problem.

Ensure the DC Power group follows all ES&H electrical safety requirements. Ensure the group maintains all required training and provide feedback to improve the safety as appropriate.

Foster a culture of safety within the group.

Be responsible for multiple major projects and budgets.

Qualifications We Require :

Education :

Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering required.

Experience :

10 years of relevant experience with electrical engineering systems required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities :

  • Background in electrical engineering, especially in a scientific or technical environment.
  • Proven experience managing or supervising groups (people) and technical projects (>

$k).

  • The ideal candidate will be an expert in electrical network theory, AC / DC power conversion, switch-mode power conversion, and phase-controlled AC-DC conversion and semiconductor devices, demonstrated through conference and journal papers.
  • Familiar with control system theory, digital circuits and-or embedded systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to compose and publish research work in journals and conference proceedings.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate at all levels.
